A must see! Go first thing in the morning to avoid crowd. I t does get busy by mid-day.
The core of the trip is the 45M boat ride in the underground river but the entire trip is roughly 6.5H. The 1.5H ride up was through green country with some small roadside villages en route. Being with a guide saved lots of procedural unknowns. One next took a less than 15M bangka ride to the area of the river. A further 5M walk to you to the entrance area and your boat. Supplied items were lifejackets worn on the bangkas and the underground river boat trip plus a hard hat and audiotape for the underground river boat trip. The audiotape was very good. The cave is not a Disney production. There is minimal lighting from the boat captains. After a second bangka ride, it was time for lunch at the Gusto Grill. Same was no more than average. Lots of nodding off on the way home. This was by and large an enjoyable visit to a unique World Heritage Site.
The Underground River is an amazing work of nature. If you are in Palawan, I would recommend doing this tour. I actually got to do it twice as the first time we headed into the cave system, the audio device was synched up properly. Wear shoes that you don't mind getting wet or bring an extra pair with you. I also went cave spelunking and zip lining. All in all, I enjoyed the tour.
This package is over-priced. We paid US50 per person thinking we will get better quality for this tour. They squeeze 10 travelers in the van making the entire 1 1/2 hour journey extremely uncomfortable. We met a family of 6 in the hotel we were staying and they only paid Php1800 equivalent to US36 per person. When we reach the pier waiting for the boat ride, we realized the family of 6 came in the same type of Van as ours, will be riding the same type of boats as ours. They even have the same lunch buffets just like our. Basically, regardless, who ever you buy your tour package from, you get the same quality from the local operators.
Awesome experience. There was a lot of waiting -- drive to Sabang took more than 1.5 hours, then another wait of approx 2 hours at the port but it was worth the wait. The underground river with all the rock formations was spectacular.
I would highly recommend it!
Upon hotel check in, I was told by the tour guide company what time they would be arriving and picking me up, now, I did not book in peak season so it wasn't too busy, but the best thing is that there was me and my girlfriend, and we picked up another 2 couples on the way.
The tour guide explained everything about it to us and guided us through the process. It was really a good, we did not have to wait too long. Once we had our boarding number, we only waited for around 30 mins in an open area near the docks. There is somewhere to sit in the shade if you get too hot.
Now, we boarded the boat to go to the area, it took around 10 or 15 minutes to reach, not too long.
Upon arrival we took a walk up from the beach and we was handed our audio device for listening to- this is good if you're interested in the history and some safety concerns, we took another slow walk which took around 10 minutes for our group to another boat where we was given a helmet just for safety reasons, a few minutes later we boarded the boat and off we went into the cave.
Now, the only part we wasn't told was how to operate the audio device, this really was not a problem because our boat guide was also speaking and giving us a tour of the cave, and I very highly recommend it compared to the audio device! He made our whole group laugh, I'm sorry but I can't remember his name, but he was very good.
The only downside is that we could not take any photos, even with flash it seemed that the cave is still too dark, It's just a shame we could not go further, maybe next time.
I still highly recommend it, it's a once in a lifetime experience.
A bit extra, after the river tour, our tour guide took us to Ugong Rock caving, and we had a new experience here, climbing the cave and then gliding down, you could do it as superman if you really wished, this was unexpected but it was very nice, the tour guide explained everything to us, and the driver was also very safe compared to some drivers I have seen.
Very good well organised tour, pick at hotel was on time, all went smoothly. boats were all safe Underground river is the 8th wonder of the world, well worth the trip, the buffet lunch had plenty of choices so no need to go hungry, even included a soft drink.
Such a spectacular visit to this nature-made site! No words or pictures can truly describe the beauty - this is a must-visit for everyone!!! And our guide made our tour extra fun and interesting with his ad-lib, even my teenager enjoyed it as much as me.
