The guide was very kind and professional. Considering the safety of travelers, food and beverage recommendations were all excellent. I felt a genuine affection for his life in Pavela. It was the most meaningful tour in my life. I am deeply grateful to the guide who inspired me deeply.
Alberto was our tour guide he lived in this Favela, and it was very nice of him to show us his neigborhood.
i do recommend this tour very muc. getting to know this part of Rio de Janeiro was fascinating, also there were great views...
This was an eye opening tour that exceeded our expectations. Alberto, was not only our guide but also a local resident who showed us the entire neighborhood from an insiders perspective. He was funny and professional and shared the history of the favelas in great detail. This tour was definitely money and time well spent in Rio. I highly recommend this tour.
This tour given by Carlos was amazing! Definitely one of the highlights of my trip. I am so glad I booked this because he really does an amazing job of giving you the truth behind the other side of Brazil.
This was incredibly eye opening, and a true cultural experience. Our guide, Carlos, was actually from Rocinha, so hearing his perspective very honest, it seemed, was amazing.
If you have trouble with uneven surfaces, potentially consider not doing this. There is a lot of narrow path walking, with uneven stairs, through the interior apartments of the Favela. An unimaginably cool experience, but can be a little disorienting if you struggle with stairs.
There were also a couple of snacks along the way for purchase pastels and drinks, so make sure you have small bills, so you can eat all of the delicious food.
First and foremost, it's important to say that my wife and I were extremely nervous and anxious about this tour. However, it was one of the BEST things we did whilst in Rio. Our local guide picked us up from our hotel along with a number of other people and drove us to the top of Rochina. Our guide was keen for us to learn about the other side of Brazil away from the party town of Rio, to see the side of Brazil that makes the country the 8th richest country in the world but 2nd in terms of poverty behind Haiti.
The knowledge of our tour guide was extraordinary. He was friendly, welcoming, funny and above all made us feel welcome and safe in HIS neighbourhood. We learned about how homes were built, about social and economical problems, education, what the government has done and what the government COULD be doing to help these communities. We walked down through the passages of Rocinha, seeing homes, businesses, banks and art finishing in a bar towards the bottom of the hill for a drink and then on to a capoeria performance to round the tour off.
Overall we loved this tour, we felt that we took away a lot of information and, although nervous throughout, on reflection we never felt unsafe. On one hand it was difficult to see people struggling but on the other it was inspiring to see that a community had been built and how strong this community was. There is a lot of walking down often slippery steps so not recommended for those with trouble walking but hands down one of the best things we did whilst in Rio.
Excellent tour. Our guide was awesome and gave us loads of information about the favela. The route he took us on made prfect sense and gave us good insights into what we wanted to experience. We felt safe throughout and definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Rio de Janeiro.
