This is a really good affordable day out. The boat trip was really enjoyable and we felt in good hands. The views were amazing even on a not so good day and the commentary was helpful and interesting. We arrived at Swanage onto the lovely Victorian wooden pier and walked about 15 minutes to get to the train station. The train ride was great with it's bouncy old seats. We loved looking out of the window and seeing the steam and hearing the noises. You could stop at Corfe castle which we chose not to but would be worth doing. We had a walk around Swanage before our return boat trip back.
This combined booking Sea cruise and Steam Train to Corfe Castle made for an excellent day out. Admittedly, we had glorious weather so that really enhanced the experience. Informative commentary from the Captain was interesting. Stunning scenery! The trip is about 1 hr to Swanage. If you have time, Swanage is lovely town. For the best Fish and Chips EVER, try 'The Fish Plaice'. It takes a good 15 mins to walk to the train station from the harbour, so be mindful if you want to catch a particular train or the return boat, as you'll have to leave yourself enough time to get to and from the station. Having been given the train timetable in Poole from the ticket office before we left was helpful. We were only slightly disappointed that there were limited Steam engines running on the day we visited and because of the timings to get the boat back to Poole, we had to ride a Diesel train both ways. This by no means took away from the experience.
Corfe Castle National Trust is amazing - especially for kids. They can dress up and there are lots of ruins for them to climb on and over. For those with mobility problems, walking around the castle could be a challenge as the ground is very uneven and some paths are steep. The little village is very charming.
Note: If you need to get a particular boat back, don't arrive too close to the departure time, as you may find there isn't room for you. They only allow so many people on the boat and it may be full by the time you get there and you'll have to wait for the next one which may be an hour or 2 later.
On our return boat trip, we were treated to the sounds of a live band - they were excellent! Part of a 'mini music festival' that weekend with lots of music being played in different locations around Poole.
Lovely day out! Advise you to get to the boat early. Great views on the boat. It's about 1/2 mile walk to the train station but through the shops! Stream train again very nice (buy a coffee to take on board) Corfe castle recommend, with lunch or Afternoon tea @ NT over looking the castle
Most enjoyable and very good value for money. 1.5 hours from Poole Harbour along Jurassic Coast to Swanage. Time to walk to station and board Steam Train. Got off at Corfu and even though dinosaurs feel like the climb up to the Castle, could have done. You need warm clothes on the boat. Interesting commentary.
The trip was well worth doing my only advise would be to make sure you keep an eye on the time to catch your steam train as we missed our train our fault and the next one wasn't until over an hour.
We will definitely book again early September.
We were looking for a surprise for a 70 th birthday and this was perfect. A great way to see Poole and swanage from the sea and then to ride and the steam railway. Perfect, the buffet car at the station served lovely food and the volunteers were lovely as well, overall an excellent day
The sea and steam adventure was very good and if the advertised times had been adhered to then my planned day would have been excellent. The problem occurred at the booking office at Poole where we were told that unfortunately the last boat back from swanage pier would be 15.00hrs as opposed to the 16.45 hrs as advertised on the website. This was explained as due to tides which I understand however losing that 1.5 hrs meant that we had to forgo actually visiting Corfe castle and experiencing the amazing views because we did not have time to explore the site. As the whole experience was a birthday present for my partner it was a shame that we had to miss this. However this said, we really enjoyed both the boat trip and train ride which were excellent. It was just a shame we didn't have a little more time to enjoy the attractions in swanage and at Corfe castle fully.
An absolutely fantastic day - we took friends with us who were visiting from Germany - the weather was glorious which of course helped, however the trip was great. The sea cruise was easy to locate, and everyone on board was really helpful and friendly. We had a good commentary as we left Poole harbour and sailed around the Purbeck coast. The pier in Swanage was just a short walk through the town to the train station. The steam train was fantastic - such a great group of volunteers and staff work on the line - it was a real treat. We rode the whole line, then went back to Corfe Castle for the afternoon and had a really enjoyable time there. Would thoroughly recommend the day to anyone - excellent value.
