It was with great trepidation that I booked the Dharavi Slum Small-Group Tour in Mumbai. Like everyone else who watched Slumdog Millionaire, I expected the Dharavi Slum in which the movie was filmed to be dirty, impoverished and quite possibly dangerous. Boy was I wrong. What an eye-opening experience this tour proved to be! Our guide, Champ, is a former resident of the slum and expertly navigated our group through the narrow passageways therein. At no point did I feel unsafe throughout the entire visit. What Champ also successfully did is reset my definition of slum. He pointed out how the slum served as a place of immense opportunity for its inhabitants, as well as illustrating the sense of community within the slum. If you are hesitant to book this tour, do it. You will get a rare glimpse into a completely different world.
A very eye opening tour. The slum is huge and functions as any city yet with limited access to normal resources. It was remarkable the infrastructure which was present through out this city within Mumbai. Definately do this tour if you want to experience a striking reality of Mumbai. I suggest closed shoes as the paths through the slum can be a bit dirty. Be prepared to also go in very dark alleys and climb precarious stairs with in the plastics recycling factory.
This tour was the absolute highlight of our Mumbai visit. The guide from reality tours was fantastic, took time to explain Govt policy on slums, was considerate and helpful with my wifes slight disability , all in all a most informative ,educational expierience. Would highly recomend this tour for all from 8 to 80.
Our tour was great, we really got to see Dharavi and learn so much about the people and the place. A very special thanks to our guide Raj, he was amazing, my husband cut his head on the edge of a steel beam and needed to have stitches, Raj was so patient, he took us to the doctor, then to a small hospital clinic, he waited with us then we continued the tour! Raj took us to see his Mum who gave us a warm welcome and a lovely cup of chai. Thanks Raj, you were a great guide and we highly recommend this company -Reality Tours in Dharavi.
Swathi was our guide, she weaved a tale of the people of Dharavi, India, and her family as easily as she weaved us in and out of the alley ways of Dharavi. If you want to understand the migrations inside and outside of India, how the country, the people, and the economy work, and perhaps where some of your favourite Bombay snacks come from this tour is right up your alley so to speak.
