What You Can Expect

Make your own way to the tourist office in Aix-en-Provence to meet your guide and small group of no more than 8 people, then set off to discover the picturesque landscapes of Provence.

Head northeast, through the rugged peaks and forested valleys of the Alpilles National Park to the hilltop village of Baux-de-Provence, where you’ll have time to visit the medieval castle and marvel at the views over the surrounding countryside. Continue to nearby Saint-Remy de Provence, where Vincent Van Gogh famously painted ‘Starry Night’. As well as following in the footsteps of the iconic artist, stop to admire the views from the Plateau des Antiques, browse the lively market (Wednesdays only), and pause to enjoy lunch (own expense) at one of the many cafés and restaurants.

After lunch, visit the hilltop village of Gordes, voted one of France’s ‘Most Beautiful Villages’, and renowned for its charming medieval architecture, atmospheric cobbled lanes, and 12th-century castle, perched high on the Plateau de Vaucluse.

Next, drive through the Luberon regional park, where summer visitors will have chance to admire Provence’s lavender fields in bloom – a magnificent landscape of purple stretching onto the horizon. Arrive in Roussillon, a village famed for its ochre, and set out to discover the Ochre Trail, a 30-minute walk through the ancient ochre quarry of Provençal Colorado.

There’s just time for a stop in Lourmarin, former home of author Peter Mayle, who wrote his bestselling book ‘A Year in Provence’ about the region, before returning to Aix-en-Provence, where your tour ends back at the tourist office.
