What You Can Expect

Akaroa Shore Excursion: Banks Peninsula, Christchurch City Tour and Sheep Farm Tour

Sheep dogs at work

Start your shore excursion with convenient pickup at the Akaroa cruise port, where your knowledgeable guide departs for the nearby city of Christchurch. You’ll follow a scenic route along the Banks Peninsula, a volcanic region situated on the east coast of the South Island.

On arrival in ‘The Garden City,’ soak up the highlights of New Zealand's second-largest city during a guided tour. Walk through the Christchurch Botanic Gardens; see the Museum and Art Centre, Avon River and the Bridge of Remembrance; and learn about recovery efforts after the 2011 earthquake destroyed much of the city center.

Then set out into the Canterbury Plains, traveling just 30 minutes from Christchurch into the heart of sheep-farming country. You’ll visit a working sheep farm, set in a bucolic locale. Admire the sheep dogs rounding up the flock, then pet the sheep and watch a sheep-shearing demonstration — you can even try your hand at it, if you wish.

Enjoy afternoon tea before your 6-hour tour ends at the cruise port to meet your ship.

In the rare event your ship has departed, we will arrange for transportation to the next port-of-call. If your ship is delayed and you are unable to attend this activity, your money will be refunded. Scotty was excellent! Knew a lot of the background and history of Christchurch. He kept us entertained throughout the excursion. Very informative on earthquake and rebuild of Christchurch. Love the sheep farm visit. Great sheep dog show and wool shearing. We were treated for tea and snakes before going back to ship.

We tendered in to Akaroa from the ship. Akaroa was a wonderful surprise as it is a lovely port town with darling shops and restaurants. Don't miss the Woolshed, fabulous New Zealand wool products at great prices, scarves, hats, clothing, etc.

Sue was our tour guide, and was very knowledgeable and personable. We had a lovely tour of the Banks Peninsula and then on to Christchurch. After the tragic earthquake in 2011 the city is rebuilding after so much was destroyed. It will be beautiful! Then we went to a working sheep farm for a sheep dog demonstration, followed by a shearing demonstration. This was followed by a proper English Tea on the terrace provided by the farmers wife. Absolutely lovely, beautiful day on a lovely farm with all of the flowers in bloom.

We were on the Diamond Princess cruise ship and went on the Banks Peninsula, Christchurch City Tour and Sheep Farm Tour on the 26st December.

A great tour, departed at exactly 10:30 AM very on time. The view on the way to Christchurch is really beautiful, defs worth an hour and a half. Then we took an hour long city tour with our driver and tour guide Graham then a 40 mins walk for lunch in a shopping centre.

Highlight was the sheep farm though It was near Akaroa the wharf, we went to a private sheep farm and watched sheep shearing demonstration from the owner Hugh. Then had afternoon tea with himself and his wife which was lovely. I do recommend this tour!

This shore excursion has something for everyone, as it included an historical overview of the region, an opportunity to sample local cuisine and even an option to visit a real operating sheep farm. Our visit started off late due to fowl weather interfering with the ships tenders in this small port. The experienced tour operators shaved a small amount of time from each of the scheduled events on the itinerary and made allowances for individual interests, such that we were able to see everything, while indulging longer on some items based on the groups desire. This is a definite advantage to small group travel and would have been impossible on one of the ships large bus tours. For my wife and I, the absolute high point was the sheep farm visit. We lovely couple who operate the farm were very accommodating and friendly. After the gentleman explained the operations and demonstrated the sheep shearing and herding techniques, we enjoyed tee with the lady of the house, who could not have been more friendly and inviting. They were a treasure and made us feel completely comfortable while visiting their home.

We loved the drive to Christchurch and seeing all the memorials and reconstruction after the earthquake. One of the highlights of our cruise was going to the sheep farm. It was wonderful to be in a small group and actually visit with the farmer. Highly recommend!

The Sheep Farm Tour was wonderful. The sheep farmer. Hugh, was very personable and informative. He wouldn't have cared if we stayed far longer than we did. His wife, Kathryn, entertained us with tea and biscuits after he told us about the farm and its operations. Just watching him shear a sheep was most informative and explaining the whole process of what happens to the wool after the shearing was very interesting. As we completed the demonstration and complemented him on what appeared to us to be expert skills, he said he was the sheep whisperer, laughingly. We were on a Princess Cruise which tendered us to the small town of Akaroa, beautiful and well worth a walk around, lovely local shops and restaurants set on a beautiful bay.

The country side drive to Christchurch through the hills is lovely, though longer than expected. The city tour was the usual city tour, interesting because of all the destruction from the earthquakes. We were dropped off for lunch at the Container Mall, a concept instituted after one of the earthquakes. We found it very intriguing and enjoyed a walk around with a quick lunch on our own.
