This tour is for those who enjoy beautiful scenery. Christchurch is a 1.5 hour drive from Akaroa cruise port. This drive is a feast for the eyes. Our tour guide was knowledgeable, personable, and patient. We got off the bus at an area overlooking the city of Christchurch and our driver/guide pointed and explained the history of the city below, which areas and how much was leveled by the 7.8 earthquake a few years back. Our last stop was at the Canterbury museum and amazing gardens where we were given time to explore. During this time my 85-year-old uncle wandered away, lost his way, and missed the bus back to port. I stayed to help with the search. Akaroa French Connection employee Karen, was able to locate my uncle and another employee, Taylor, drove us back to port. My family and I are indebted to these ladies for going out of their way to help us. I will not hesitate to sign up for one of their tours again.
Great trip but personally did not find much of interest in Christchurch. Excellent tour guide
Nice tour on hop on hop off with an excellent narrator. Loved Victoria peak area, parliament and the cablecar. Too bad it was so windy and that bus stops were not clearly marked due to construction.
This was a really long bus ride close to 2 hours from the pier to Christchurch, leaving very little time in Christchurch. We were late leaving as the tour operator continued to sell tickets after departure time of 1030a, which I found annoying. This late start set us back 30 minutes with only 1 1/2 hours in Christchurch. Barely time to walk a few blocks and get some lunch, then back on the bus for another 2 hour ride back.
-Scenery around Akoroa to Christchurch is beautiful, mountains and bay vistas, a few photo stops
-Long time on a bus
-Christchurch is a city in transition, still recovering from the earthquake in 2007. Lots of construction, and when done will be a beautiful, modern city.
-NO time to spend in Akoroa, return to ship and board one of the last tenders at 5p.
-It really needs more than a breeze through to enjoy it.
TIPS- Next time we would opt out of the full day Christchurch tour and spend more time in Akoroa, which is a really nice village, quite large with shops and restaurants. There was a market the day we were there. Good way to see a small village and locals living life. I would take 2 hour area tour to see the mountains and return and spend time in the port.
Too much time in bus without stopping 2 hours at the start.
Too little time to see sights in Christchurch 1 1/2 hrs.
Too many people added to bus for return trip. Very uncomfortable.
We would have been better off taking shuttle to Christchurch and spending 4 hours in the town.
Driver pleasant and nice.
Bottom line: too much time in bus. Tour description did not say 2 hrs without stopping.
