What You Can Expect

Lofthellir Cave Exploration from Akureyri

See Hverfell volcano, near Lake Myvatn

The countryside surrounding Akureyri is a rugged, lunar-like landscape of volcanic lava fields and otherworldly rock formations. Your full-day tour of this fascinating terrain begins with pickup at your Akureyri hotel in a minivan. Soon, you will see very few signs of civilization as you make your way through this remote stretch of Iceland.

Admire the volcanic Lake Mývatn, and then veer off the paved road onto a rocky track that will take you even deeper into this desolate landscape. Steaming geothermal vents and multiple craters like Hverfell and Lúdentarborgir are evidence of the area’s explosive past.

Disembark near the entrance to Lofthellir cave, nestled at the base of Mt Hvannfell. Gear up with protective equipment, and follow your guide’s instructions to descend into the rocky depths. Once inside, spend about an hour walking through the darkened chambers filled with elaborate rock crystals and natural ice sculptures as your guide illuminates the geologic history of the cavern.

Return to the surface, and climb back in the minivan for a scenic drive to the town of Reykjahlíð. Purchase lunch at a local café and soak up views of Lake Mývatn before the return drive to your Akureyri hotel.
