What You Can Expect

West MacDonnell Ranges Day Trip from Alice Springs

West MacDonnell Ranges

Start early with pickup at your Alice Springs hotel and set off in your air-conditioned coaster or seat rosa for West MacDonnell National Park.

Start with a walk at Simpsons Gap to see a natural rock amphitheater that is home to endangered black-footed rock wallabies. Next, head to Standley Chasm for morning tea and a stroll along trails lined with acacias, cycads, ghost gums and cypress pines. Continue on to Ochre Pits, where rock walls are covered by white, yellow and red ochre, used for sacred ceremonies of the local Arrernte peoples.

Enjoy a picnic lunch at Ormiston Gorge, a large waterhole surrounded by red rock and visited by waterbirds such as the Pacific heron and white-faced heron. After eating, drive to Mt Sonder lookout for views of a towering sandstone wall and Mt Sonder, one of the highest points in Central Australia.

Next up, visit Ellery Creek Big Hole, one of central Australia's most pristine waterholes. Cool off with a swim and hear from your guide about the significance of the geology. Then wind down your tour as sunset splashes over the MacDonnell Ranges. Have the option to join a sunset camel ride (October to March- own expense) for your final activity of the day.

Excellent tour, it was very hot, but our guide, Hannah, made sufficient stops for restroom and food breaks that the heat really wasnt a factor. We visited several beautiful gorges in the ranges. The topography was unbelievably stunning! I highly recommend this tour from Alice Springs. The tour bus was also very spacious and comfortable with great AC. Hannah, our guide, was outstanding!

Many thanks to our tour guide Clive who was very professional and extremely knowledgeable with a touch of humour. Hoghly recommend the tour which provided us with fantastic scenery and a lot of history.

We had to alter our day for this trip as the day we chose did not have enough passengers. I'm glad we did as Clive was a most informative guide, a competent driver and an amiable person. He had to get one passenger to the Camel Farm by 5 pm so we all had to be on the ball to complete the whole journey. We made it by 15 mins!. We could have done with a bigger bus but I understand that they had a breakdown that morning that caused a change to a smaller bus. Clive was most sensitive to aboriginal lore and informed us what we could and couldn't do. In Service terms, he runs a tight but friendly ship.

There is not a lot to do in Alice Springs proper and we wanted a full day, small group tour if possible. As luck would have it, there were only four of us, and Matt and Chloe could not have been more friendly, helpful and informative. Chloe is a local and Matt was extremely well informed, so much so, that other tour groups who happened to overlap with us at certain places, followed our group for their local knowledge and sometimes interactive displays. We had a great day, we saw a lot, learned a lot, ate well and were thoroughly entertained. We have been on several tours, both here and overseas, this was one of the best and we couldn't fault it. We can highly recommend Emu Run Experiences, certainly for this tour anyway, and booking it through Viator, well that is always easy.
