After morning hotel pickup in Anchorage, drive south with your guide along Seward Highway — a National Scenic Highway — including the Turnagain Arm, to Mt Alyeska, 4,000 feet (1,219 meters) high. Board an aerial tram that takes you up 2,280 feet (695 meters), and see slopes that receive an average of 54 feet (16 meters) of snow annually. From this height on a clear day, you can see glaciers and the foothills of the Chugach Mountains where they meet the sea at Cook Inlet.
Head back down for lunch at an eatery located in scenic Girdwood. A typical lunch includes soup, sourdough bread, and desserts. (Please notify the operator of any dietary restrictions before the tour.)
After lunch, continue to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, a rescue and rehabilitation organization for Alaska’s wild mammals, including elk and bison, grizzly bears, lynx, eagles, and more.
Your tour ends with return hotel transport. If you’ve signed up for the glacier cruise you will continue on for this portion of your experience.
Optional Portage Lake Glacier Cruise:
Get close and personal with Portage Glacier on a 1-hour cruise across Portage Lake. Learn about the glaciers, geology, and wildlife of Portage Valley from an onboard naturalist. From a safe distance from the edge of Portage Glacier, snap photos and ‘listen’ to the glacier move.
