What You Can Expect

Talkeetna Rafting and Rail Tour from Anchorage

Talkeetna Rafting

This 10-hour nature tour in southern Alaska runs from June 1 to September 1. While summer days are often warm, the river raft ride can be chilly with the breeze, so please bring a sweater or jacket and a hat, camera and sunglasses. Fall days can be quite cold, so dress in layers. This tour is not handicapped-accessible.

After hotel pickup in Anchorage, travel with your guide by van to the historic village of Talkeetna to ride our country's last flag-stop train. The short train ride takes you through the forest of southern Alaska to Chase.

From Chase, follow your guide on a short stroll down to the glacier-fed Susitna River to begin your rafting journey. This section of the river is calm, allowing you to relax and soak up Alaska’s natural beauty in peace. Pass ferns that grow more than 8 feet (2 meters) tall, and spot wildlife like moose, eagles, the occasional bear and salmon.

Pull over to one of Susitna River’s islets for lunch. Your guide opens a ‘Flag Stop Rail ’n Raft’ cooler filled with a gourmet lunch prepared by the Historic Talkeetna Roadhouse. Typical sandwich options include salmon, veggie, BLT, pulled pork and vegetarian.

After lunch, drift back down the river for another 12 miles (19 km), and reach the shores of Talkeetna in the late afternoon. Your tour ends with van transport back to your Anchorage hotel.

4 star rating: Recommended September 2015

i think the guide could show us more than he did.

2 star rating: It was OK, but could have been better August 2016

The train ride was too short and the rafting portion was too long given the river was calm and no wild life to observe. The guides were great. The trip was not worth the price paid.
