Early Start But Great Tour

The tour to Lake Atitlan was a long process. We were picked up at our hotel at a little after 5:50am and then spent almost the next hour picking up other people from the hotels in Antigua. When we finally left Antigua, the next two hours were spent making our way to Panajachel but included several stops to let people on the van off or allow others to board. By the time we reached the tour office at about 9am, there were only 4 out of the 14 original people on the van who were going on the tour. Our tour guide Pedro met us and then took us to a place where we could eat breakfast/have free time until 9:35am. Afterward, we walked about half a mile to the boat. Pedro gave us some history and information about the places we were going to visit and taught us some Mayan words in the three different languages of the villages we would visit before we departed. I really liked our tour guide. He spoke Spanish, English, and the native Mayan languages of the villages where we visited. He was very kind and attentive as well. He noticed my elderly father was walking slow and offered to call us a tuk-tuk to give him a ride up the hill to the church and where the Mayan textile-workshop was. Pedro was also funny and knew a lot about all of the places we visited. He also knew exactly where to stand to get the perfect angle for taking pictures. As a photographer, I really appreciated that. He would also offer to take pictures of you in each location too. At each of the last two locations, he gave us an option as to what we wanted to do. At the second stop, we could either go up the hill to drink coffee at a local café or drink liquor at the bar next to the dock. At the last stop, he gave us the option to do a tuk-tuk tour to 5 different locations for an additional cost of Q25 per person or to do a walking tour to a church. We ordered our food when we arrived to the restaurant and then did a tuk-tuk tour. There were many beautiful places to take pictures and we got to see more of the local culture. At the end of the tour, our guide also gave us a nice personalized gift, which was so nice of him. I would recommend this tour to people with at least a moderate fitness level. The hills you have to climb on this tour are very steep and if you have a bad back or knee trouble, then this could be difficult for you. However, they are willing to accommodate and there are tuk-tuks everywhere that you can take for Q10-25 per person depending on how far you are going.

Enjoyed the day. Alex our tour guide was informative and always kept an upbeat tone. Long trip there and back and not for anyone with a nervous disposition- drivers are crazy. That said the scenery and small towns were worth it

Hi mjbass, we are happy that you liked the lake. Regarding the driver, carretera interamericana is a very busy road, and it is used by many bus and truck drivers. People in Guatemala drive very different from other countries. But we will address your concern with our drivers. Thank you!

Transportation Problems

We loved our tour guide, Alex, but the transportation between Antigua and Panajachel was horrible. They were 45 minutes late picking us up in the morning. Coming back, we had no explanation about anything. We drove all around town and even stopped at a gas station along the highway to pick up more and more people until every seat was completely full. Most of the people driving back with us weren’t part of our tour at all. We were stuffed in the van and very uncomfortable. Our driver didn’t speak English and he drove at an unsafe speed, we were nearly hit by a bus at one point when we stopped in the road. I was grateful to get back to Antigua alive. I hated the transportation. I can not recommend this tour because of the transportation but again we very much enjoyed Alex once we got to Panajachel.

Hi Becky, we are very sorry to hear your uncomfortable experience. There are days that our vans have to bring the full capacity of the vehicle because of the large demand on the schedule. But this is no excuse for the way the driver drove. We will have a meeting with the driver and discuss this matter. Thank you for your feedback, this helps us to improve!!!

We enjoy our time at lake Atitlan. We would enjoy it even more if the boat was more comfortable and we could see the lake better while in the boat. The seats are so low you can barely see anything while seating.

Pick-up could have been better we drove around for nearly an hour just within a couple miles of my hotel and didn't pick up anyone. The boat tour and guide were great!

Initially I was skeptical about this tour as my driver was late picking me up from Antigua. He did not speak any English, so I trusted that the tour was valid as he knew where to pick me up. While on the bus, I spoke to a few women who indicated that they were headed to Mexico. I was initially alarmed as I was going to Lake Atitlan. One of the women offered to translate for me to the driver. He indicated that I would be dropped off, picked up by a taxi, and then taken to my guide. Once I knew this, I was fine. However, I did wish these details would have been explained ahead of time. I eventually connected with my guide who was AWESOME. He was so kind, so smart, just great. I was the only one on the tour that day and had a wonderful experience touring the various villages with him. It was a great tour and truly worthwhile. It definitely superseded my initial concerns.
