What You Can Expect

Athens Super Saver: City Sightseeing Tour plus Half-Day Cape Sounion Trip

Athens Super Saver: Athens Sightseeing Tour plus Cape Sounion and Temple of Poseidon Half-Day Trip

Morning Athens Sightseeing Tour:
Begin your morning Athens sightseeing tour with a pickup from your Athens hotel, or alternatively, at a meeting point in central Athens.

Relax into your air-conditioned coach and drive to the Acropolis, the ancient citadel of Athens perched high above the city on a rocky outcrop. Head through the gates with your guide, and stroll around the top Acropolis attractions, including the Temple of Athena Nike, Propylea, Erechtheion, and the spectacular Parthenon.

Having explored these classical masterpieces, continue to the Panathenaic Stadium, the arena that hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Snap photos of the all-marble stadium and then drive to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Greek Parliament House in Syntagma Square.

Admire the handsome government buildings around the square, and then head along Panepistimiou Street, one of Athens’ main avenues. See St Dionysius Cathedral with its arcaded portico, and pass the elegant buildings of the University of Athens, National Library and Academy of Athens.

Lastly, pay a visit to the Acropolis Museum, the ultra-modern museum that houses many of the classical statues, friezes and artifacts recovered from the Acropolis. After viewing the highlights here, conclude your sightseeing tour, and enjoy around an hour of free time to relax or have lunch (own expense) at a local taverna before your afternoon tour.

Afternoon Cape Sounion Trip:
At around 2:45pm, reconvene with your coach and leave Athens behind as you journey south to Cape Sounion. As you travel, admire the beautiful beaches of the Saronic Gulf and hear tales of the Cape and its showpiece: the glimmering white Temple of Poseidon.

On arrival, leave your coach and walk up to the temple, built high on cliffs overlooking the Aegean Sea. Take in the awesome sea views and if it’s clear weather, gaze out over the island of Kea in the distance.

Admire the Doric columns of the 5th century BC temple and hear about the Greek myths that surround the building. Then, see the inscription made on one of the columns by the English poet Lord Byron in the early 1800s.

Afterward, travel back to Athens where your tour ends at your hotel or the original start point.

We loved starting Greece, trip of a lifetime, with the Acropolis and then down to Cape Sounion. A most delightful, informative day. The tour guides were terrific.

The morning was full of information and sights with the Acropolis and its museum as the highlight. The afternoon took us to a beautiful spot in the south of Greece by the sea. The tour was less informative, more of a trip outside the city to see this beautiful region and the temple of Poseidon.

Great tour, very knowledgeable tour guide. Helps to be on a tour to be able to skip the lines of people trying to see the acropolis. The Cape Sounion tour was also good. A downside is that I thought we would be able to see the sunset. This only happens a few times a year.

This has been rated five stars for the Athens Super Saver: City Sightseeing Tour
This has been rated two stars for the Half Day Cape Sounion Trip
These are actually two different tours with two different tour guides. The tour guide for the Athens Super Saver: City Sightseeing Tour was fantastic. The tour guide for the Half Day Cape Sounion Trip did not really get involved except for a few minutes up at the site.
One of the nice parts of this tour was that we got picked up at our hotel.

The Athens Super Saver: City Sightseeing Tour rated five starts was terrific. We had a great tour guide named Dora. She had extensive knowledge about all of the archaeological sites. When we went to the Acropolis she explained the history of the temples and what they represented in ancient times. She also talked to a great extent about the different spots during the city tour. At the museum she explained to us about the digs and where in different parts of the world some of the archaeological findings now remain. Because of her knowledge and great ability to explain all the details of these ancient places and finds, this was a very exciting and enjoyable tour.

Half-Day Cape Sounion Trip: Rated two stars: The actual trip to the Temple of Poseidon was beautiful. Unfortunately, we never stopped along the way for a chance to take pictures. The tour guide spoke very little about the areas we were passing. When we got to the Temple of Poseidon , she spoke about it for a little while and then told us we were on our own for the remaining time at the site. On our way back, she did not relate any information again about the areas we were passing, and again did not have an opportunity to stop for pictures. The ride and site themselves were very beautiful and interesting. This could have been a great tour with the right tour guide. Rated two stars.
