Overview

Follow in the footsteps of the ancient Greeks on a fascinating full-day trip to Mycenae and Epidaurus from Athens. Traveling by air-conditioned coach, you'll drive along the beautiful Saronic Gulf and into the Peloponnese to the atmospheric hilltop ruins of Mycenae, a fortified city from the second millennium BC. See the famous Lion’s Gate, Tomb of Agamemnon and Palace, and after a stop in pretty Nauplia, continue to another archaeological treasure, Epidaurus. Pick your way around the UNESCO-listed Sanctuary of Askeplios and ogle the age-old theater, a wonder of ancient architecture.
  • Day trip from Athens to Mycenae and Epidaurus
  • See ancient Greek remains and the tomb of Agamemnon in Mycenae
  • Enjoy a scenic drive along the Saronic Gulf coast
  • Visit Epidaurus, birthplace of Apollo's son and an ancient place of healing
  • Stop at the town of Nauplia
Begin your day trip with a pickup at your Athens hotel or from near Syntagma Square in central Athens. Settle inside your air-conditioned coach and admire the scenery as you trace the coast of the Saronic Gulf into the Peloponnese.

After around 1.5 hours, arrive at the ancient hilltop city of Mycenae and enjoy a walking tour of the ruins of this once powerful, fortified settlement. Hear how the city was, in Greek myth, ruled by King Agamemnon, and view highlights such as the Palace, Tomb of Agamemnon and Lion’s Gate.

Afterward, stop in the pretty seaport of Nauplia before continuing to ancient Epidaurus, the mythological birthplace of Asklepios, the Greek god of healing.

Tour the spectacular relics, including the UNESCO-listed Sanctuary of Asklepios, with its crumbled buildings. Then, ogle the breathtaking ancient theatre of Epidaurus. Built in the 4th century BC, the colossal theater is considered one of the world’s most beautiful and still boasts fabulous acoustics.

Your trip ends back at the original departure point in Athens.

The Mycenae and Epudaurus was filled with sights and activities. In addition to the classical archaeological sites, the trip included a stop at Nauplio, modern Greece’s first capital. The guide was well informed and knowledgeable. She answered all questions and was attentive to the needs of everyone.

It was a wonderful experience walking among the Mycenaean ruins, however the true highlight was the theater in Epidaurus. Our guide Mena was great and very knowledgeable. The only thing I did not enjoy was having a very long lunch in a generic catering hall. That time should have been used during our stop in Nauplia, which was so charming.

The lunch was prearranged hotel food and spoiled the experience for me. I would have rather gone to a taverna, but they work the timing out that makes anything but the hotel lunch possible. I was dropped off at the wrong hotel and had to use my map to find my way back to the correct drop point and then to my hotel. After a long day, that was the last thing I wanted to do. When I complained to the supervisor the next day, all as he said was that that was wrong and stupid. Buyer beware. Hint, don't get off the bus until you are 100 sure you are at the correct location.

It was a memorable experience and a must see for all who care about history!
We were so lucky to have Joy, for our guide, a lady with such vast knowledge of history, mythology and history of art, and the ability to present it in perfect English and French.
She was very helpful and gave us valuable information and tip to visit National Archeology Museum in Athens, to see the exhibits from Mycenae area. It was a joy to hear Joy's stories!

Guide is very knowledgeable. Tour is educational, especially if you're into Ancient Greek History. It was just unfortunate that it was raining the day I went. The guide is kind enough to lend me her extra umbrella.

I took this tour before visiting Athens world class archaeological museum, which was a fortunate happenstance. I had much more perspective about all the amazing artifacts found there. Our guide was outstanding, and it was a wonderful experience walking among the Mycenaean ruins. Agamemnons tomb was a highlight.

This was definitely worth a long day to see Mycenae and Epidaurus. The only thing I would change is the Lunch. We stopped between Mycenae and Epidaurus at a hotel for Lunch. The hotel was basically by it self in the middle of a field. So, you basically have to eat lunch here, there are no other options. I would have preferred to have had the hotel lunch at Nafplion, and thus had more options and more time to see Nafplion.

Loved the place and the guide -unfortunately I cannot remember her name, she was a Greek lady and her grasp of English was fantastic! A great professional.

The impressive Epidaurus theatre was the highligh of the trip, a true gem, but we also managed to get to see interesting sites like the lions door and Agammenons grave in Mycenae and also had a short stop for photos by the Corinth channel.

All in all, it was a perfect day. 100 recommended!
