Return Details

Returns to original departure point
Take in the spectacular lava fields and natural beauty of Rangitoto Island, starting with the ferry ride from downtown Auckland. On arrival, hop into a 4WD tractor-pulled tram for a guided tour of the volcanic island.

As you traverse rugged lava fields, an informative guide narrates Rangitoto’s volcanic origins and geology. Discover the island’s thriving plant life — around 200 species of moss, plants and trees, including the largest pohutukawa forest in the world.

Upon reaching the base of the summit, it’s a moderate half-mile (.8-km) walk along a wooden boardwalk to reach the top, where you’re rewarded with a panorama of the Auckland skyline and the Hauraki Gulf. There are no shops on Rangitoto--you'll want to bring water, snacks, and sunscreen with you.

Afterward, rejoin the tram to explore the island’s western side, passing modest 1920s beach homes called bachs, and possibly glimpsing obsolete ships left to decay on the island’s hidden shores. Your tour ends with a return ferry ride to Auckland.

Lava galore

Our guide was very informative and helpful. It's a fascinating place, unlike any other near Auckland. My only complaint was not having enough time at the summit, but longer would have meant either not making other interesting stops or risk missing the ferry and having to wait two hours.

Rangitoto Island Tour from Auckland
Brian_T
, Mar 2020
We were booked on this tour from Auckland on March 8th. There was a distinct lack of information at the ferry wharf as to boarding requirements such as being at the departure wharf thirty minutes before departure time and the requirement to clean our footwear. On arrival at the island we, along with others, waited for a driver to arrive. After some thirty minutes waiting and after a phone call was made by one of those waiting we were told the tour WOULD NOT take place. This lack of information was appalling. We were assured of a refund. As yet five days later no such refund has been paid. Not good enough!

The tractor pulled wagon ride was excellent decision especially in the extreme heat. Thankfully the stairs to the summit were mostly in shade. Very picturesque!

Rangitoto Island

We didn't like too much this excursion. It was well organized but what we saw was all the same during the entire time. The ride was bumpy and rocky. We did a tour of the island and it for us, it was a waste.

Kia Ora Chantal, thanks for getting in touch. I'm sorry to hear you were disappointed with the tour on the island. As the island is a volcano and protected by the Department of Conservation there isn't a lot to do on the island other than sightseeing and nature walks. I hope you enjoy the commentary and history of the island. Kind regards, Fullers360

The tour exceeded our expectations and was super amazing. We learned tons about the conservation and history of the island. Our friendly and hilarious tour guide, Mark/Mac, made the whole trip that much better. 10/10 would recommend.

Quick tour, but see the major island points
Colin_L
, Nov 2019
Our tour started late and was cut short due to the first ferry of the morning being delayed. We spent a majority (70+%) of the time in the 4WD as opposed to on hiking trails. The tour was a bit rushed, but the guide did a great job taking us to the island's major must-sees. These included hiking to the mountains summit, explore the lava fields, and see the pristine beaches on the northwesterly side of the island.
