What You Can Expect

Waitomo Caves and 'The Lord of the Rings' Hobbiton Movie Set Day Trip from Auckland

Waitomo Glowworm Caves

After hotel pickup in Auckland, enjoy a morning snack on board the luxury coach during a scenic drive through the North Island’s rolling hills and lush farmland. Listen to your guide’s commentary as you travel through the Waikato and King Country regions, and learn of the colonial history between British settlers and the Maori in Rangariri.

Upon arrival in Waitomo, you’re taken to the noteworthy Waitomo Caves for a guided tour. Descend underground into the limestone caverns to view stunning stalactites formed over centuries. Drift along the Waitomo River during a short boat ride through the Glowworm Grotto, where a breathtaking display of tiny illuminated lights glow in the darkness. Discover the mystery behind the luminescence of thousands of glowworms before enjoying a provided picnic lunch.

Your day trip continues across the Kaimai Ranges toward Rotorua and onward to Matamata, where you’ll visit the Hobbiton Movie Set, a working sheep farm and significant filming location for The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings movie series, all of which were filmed throughout New Zealand. Discover how the site was transformed into JRR Tolkien’s The Shire — home of Bilbo Baggins and his fellow hobbits. Have your photo taken in front of a hobbit hole and see the pond, the Mill, the Green Dragon Inn and more.

Your full-day tour ends in Rotorua or with a return to Auckland and drop-off at your hotel.

We loved everything about this day! If you're a fan of Lord of the Rings and even if you aren't you will enjoy it! The Movie set was nothing that we expected - it was so much better! You have lots of opportunities for great pictures and it was a beautiful day. The lunch was also really good. If you have a chance, take this tour! You won't be disappointed!

Fantastic tour and enjoyed the sites immensely. Tour guide/driver was very annoying though - talked for the full 2 1/2 hours to Hobbiton and not about where we were going and the history - was quite political which was off putting. Loved Hobbiton and the little houses. Lunch was amazing and well catered for. Great cider!!! Caves were amazing. Well worth the money.

Calling all Hobbits, Elves, Dwarves, and men of Middle Earth: this outstanding day-long trip from Auckland would be very hard to top. We made reservations on-line before leaving the USA, were plucked up and dropped back at our hotel, had a funny and knowledgable guide, Tony, who was an artist at maneuvering that massive bus in and out of inner city and highway traffic. Trip down to Hobbiton took about 2-1/2 hours, with lively commentary as we went along. Once at the Alexander farm/Hobbiton movie set we spent about 3 hours walking around the movie set not suitable for folks with disabilities...my husband was walking with a cane and it was all he could do to keep up, culminating in a very nice buffet luncheon at the Green Dragon Pub. Photo ops everywhere you look, we were told that the record for most pictures taken was 3,000!

Back on the bus for another hour or so down to the Waitomo Caves and the glow worms. BEWARE: this tour is NOT for folks who are afraid of the dark, who are claustrophobic, or who are mobility impaired. The caves are magnificent, but LOTS of steps going down, down, down. There are plenty of hand rails to help you, though. End up on a small boat - getting in and out of the boat is a little tricky, but there is assistance from the guides.

This is a great tour, and includes a very nice luncheon.

What makes a great tour even better? A great guide! We knew we had a lot of travel time on this tour but Damion made the fly by and gave us our best insight to New Zealand we could have wished for. We learned more about New Zealand with him as we did over the 2 weeks we were here. Thank You. Back to the tour. Hobbiton was interesting especially for a fan of Tolkien. The place is meticulously kept. Lunch was well worth it. The glow worms were also something to see but it was a short experience. But it is what it is. Both something to see.

The whole cave experience form the cave it's self to the amazing Glow Worms was a fantastic adventure. Our guide at Hobbiton was very knowledgeable on all the sets and supplied us with stories on how things were done.It was a fantastic tour.

Enjoyed the trip. Professionally done. Good buffet lunch and plenty of time to take pictures at Hobbiton. The only disappointment was that at Waitomo caves photography is not allowed.

Venues amazing. Our bus driver was informative, she was very friendly and efficient. Felt very safe in her hands. Rain hanging around didn't damped our day. What a spectacular experience at hobbiton and the food was great. Waitomo caves was magical. I highly recommend this company and attractions.

The Hobbiton town was beautiful, and from what they were saying they are working on opening up a few of the hobbit houses so you can actually go in and look around.
The caves were also very neat. The worms were much brighter than I expected and the tour was very informative.

This tour was superb and as advertised. Our tour guide for the day was very informative/passionate and provided vast knowledge into the history of New Zealand, as well as other less known facts about the country when traveling between destinations. I would highly recommend this activity!
