Orange and Châteauneuf-du-Pape Small-Group Day Trip

Explore Orange and Chateauneuf-du-Pape on your small-group day trip

Your 4- to 5-hour trip through the Rhône Valley begins with morning pickup from your Avignon hotel. Hop in the comfortable minivan and enjoy the 30-minute scenic ride to the nearby town of Orange, a UNESCO-listed town that boasts some of the most celebrated Roman sites in Europe.

In Orange, follow your expert guide on a tour of the city’s most impressive sites. Founded in the 1st century BC by the Romans, Orange offers a wealth of signature monuments and architecture such as the Triumphal Arch – an ancient structure inscribed with praises for and tales of various Roman emperors – and the grand Roman amphitheater, widely considered to one of Europe's most magnificent and best-preserved examples. If you visit on a Thursday, perhaps pop into the local market before departing.

Next, travel south to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a lovely town in the Rhône Valley surrounded by prestigious wine estates. Marvel at the rolling vineyards that produces varietals such as cinsault, grenache and counoise, and learn about the region’s rich viniculture and terroir. You’ll stop at a hilltop castle to snap some panoramic shots of the Rhône Valley and visit a charming winery to taste fine wine and tour the wine cellars.

You’ll have a bit of time to purchase some traditional souvenirs before heading back to Avignon. Your half-day tour ends with drop-off at your hotel by afternoon.

The tour was completely as advertised. We had the right amount of time in Orange and the wine tour was great for a first-time wine tasting. It was a relaxing afternoon but we also saw a great deal. Our guide was very knowledgeable both about the items on the tour and more generally in answering our questions about the Avignon area. She used perfect English and also was very patient in letting us practice our French.

Great tour. Our tour guide Emilie was very informative and sweet. She picked us up from the hotel and we saw Orange and the vineyards of Chateauneuf de Pape and had a very nice wine tasting at one of the wineries. I recommend this tour

The Roman arch and ancient theater in Orange are wonderfully preserved and important to see. The theater has a very good audio guide that comes with the tour. We enjoyed the tastings at the working winery and also the visit to ruins of the Pope's old chateau. Our guide Julian was excellent, fun, helpful.

It was good, and the tour guide quite helpful. I really would have preferred to have a wine tasting at several wineries in Chateauneuf du Pape, but that was not an option.

My wife and I enjoyed this trip very much. Our tour guide was wonderful (our 2nd trip with her) and knowledgable. We think that such short or full day trips are the best way to see many local sites in an efficient, comfortable and relaxed way.
