What You Can Expect

Your tour starts with pickup in Bagan or Nyaung U in the morning for the 1.5-hour drive along the Ayeyarwaddy River to Salay, stopping by the Chauk provincial markets on the way to browse souvenirs and see a piece of local culture.

A half hour later, arrive at Yokesone Monastery in Salay, located on the banks of the river. Known for its wood carvings that date back to 1882, the monastery is in the hometown of writer U Pone Nya, who lived in the 1800s during the time of Burmese kings. You'll visit his heritage museum to learn about his works.

Next, head to a resort at Mount Popa for panoramic views of the volcano. Enjoy some refreshments, and then visit the Popa Taungkalat Shrine, believed to be home to 37 spirit entities, statues of which can be found at the base. To reach the top, take off your shoes and socks and head up the 777 steps, perhaps passing by monkeys on the way.

Your tour ends with return transport to your hotel in the evening.
