Day Trip to Gobustan National Park and Mud Volcano Tour

Mud volcano

This day tour begins at Sahil, a metro station in Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan. Enjoy a 1.5-hour trip south to Gobustan National Park, officially known as the Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape. The park is actually a hill and mountain site at the southeast end of Azerbaijan’s Greater Caucasus mountain ridge.

At the park’s petroglyph museum, see ancient human bones and work tools that were used thousands of years ago during the Mesolithic period. At the mountain site, see rock paintings and carvings in an open-air museum.

Also, check out the nearby mud volcanoes. Azerbaijan is well known for active mud volcanoes — approximately 300 at the local shore, sea, and islands.

What a great experience! Getting to the mud volcanoes is almost an offroad experience! But the driver knows the way. I was a little disappointed that we saw the little volcanoes, but I didn't bother to find out which ones we were visiting. My bad. But they were interesting, and we got to stay as long as we liked.
Gobustan was interesting and very unique.
The guide was very nice, spoke good English and was very knowledgeable.
One note- the meeting point is at the EXIT of the metro station, on the other street. The map was not really helpful as it could have been in the station, etc. Its on the outside of the metro Exit.
A wonderful trip and we enjoyed it immensely.

This is an excellent tour. The guide, Jamil, was very friendly and full of interesting facts about the area. He was bang on time at the meeting point and was very knowledgeable and informative. His English was perfect. The driver was also very pleasant.
I'd highly recommend this tour as it's not too long 4 hours but a lot was learned in that time.

Our tour guide Lamiya was Fantastic! Very friendly and knowledgeable. We went to the mud volcanoes first then to see the Gobustan National Park. She took care of all the tickets, got us bottled water and shared information about the Azer culture. We loved the trip and would definitely recommend it!

This review is about the tour company, not Gobustan.

My friend sprained her ankle the night before we were due to go on the tour - she really couldn't walk in the morning and needed to rest and ice her foot. Despite only managing to contact Baku Explorer an hour before we were supposed to be setting off, the founder Eltaj Muradli VERY kindly allowed us to change our booking to a tour of Baku that evening. He was under no obligation to do this and we are still incredibly grateful.

Regarding the evening tour and perhaps Viator can copy this review into the Baku Evening Tour section as well?. We were met at a train station by our guide Elnur, a young local with excellent English at a subway station near our hotel. The tour was informal but he was very knowledgeable, as well as patient remember my friend was still hobbling, and as well as walking we took local buses, the subway and even a 'London' cab to get to the various sites of the city. We covered the old town, Martyr's Lane and the eternal flame memorial, the Flame Towers, magnificent views of the city and Caspian sea, Fountain Square and much much more.

Our only regret was that we did this tour at the end of our time in Baku - as well as learning so much about the city and it's people, it would have helped with orientation for our stay.

We will be back in Baku and I would go so far as to say we would even do this tour again ... and next time we will manage to do the Gobustan tour as well!

It was one of the best trips of my life in the depths of centuries
First we went there on different buses, then a taxi to the interesting museum, where I advise you to buy souvenirs, then again a taxi to the place already. Cave paintings, scattered in different places, a feeling that can where someone attacks you or a snake will come out from behind a bush, add impressions going and in addition ominous weather
Then we go by taxi to do not understand how volcanic formations caught up here, climb to the top of a small hill with boiling lava, but it is completely cold, then long it remains the feeling that she was calling you fall into it
I am grateful for this excellent tour company BakuTours or Baku Explorer and special guide Sabina without her all this would lose much charm
