Make your way to Flag Ponds Nature Park, a scenic beach reserve in Calvert County, Maryland. Meet a shark and fossil expert to go over the morning’s itinerary, then learn the basics of fossil hunting before combing the Chesapeake Bay shoreline. Bring your finds to the guide for analysis, and help trace the discovery to an ancient creature or Atlantic Ocean shark.
After a morning of fossil hunting, continue to the Calvert Marine Museum. Visit skates, rays, and river otters that live in the Estuarine Biology Gallery, head outside to the Marsh Walk, and keep exploring fossils in the Paleontology Gallery.
You’ll have the flexibility to eat lunch on your own schedule, choosing a boxed lunch from options that include a roast prime rib sandwich, a grilled chicken wrap, or hummus and vegetable wrap. Spend as much time as desired at Calvert Marine Museum, then finish the day with dinner (including appetizers) at a local restaurant. Visit the nearby Ruddy Duck Brewery and Grill, or drive 30 minutes to Ruddy Duck Seafood and Alehouse, on the edge of the Potomac River.
