Begin your guided tour to Montserrat in central Barcelona and hop aboard your minibus for the scenic 55-minute drive to Montserrat. Admire jaw-dropping views of the Catalan countryside as you wind through the hills and climb up the mountain road to Montserrat. Along the way, hear how the famous mountain earned its name, which means the ‘Jagged Mountain’, and learn about its spiritual significance as you arrive at the mountaintop Montserrat monastery.
After an introduction from your guide, enjoy free time to explore Montserrat independently. Perhaps tour the monastery and visit the Black Madonna, ride the funicular or cable car (own expense) to the Holy Cave or hike around the mountaintop and marvel at the magnificent views. After lunch (own expense), jump back on the minibus for the second stage of your trip.
Keep your camera close to hand as you drive through the idyllic Penedes wine region and hear how Catalan specialty Cava is produced as you wind through the vineyards. Stop to enjoy a tour of the award-winning Pares Baltà winery, which dates back to the 19th century and is renowned for its bio-organic wines.
Peek inside the old Masia and stroll the vineyards as you learn the tricks of growing, fertilizing and harvesting the grapes, and uncover the secrets of organic wine-making. Finally, make your way to the wine cellar and tasting rooms, where you’ll learn more about award-winning wines like Honeymoon Organic White Penedes, Mas Irene Red, Dominio Romano and Gratavinum Priorat DOQ.
Finish the day with a wine tasting, including the chance to sample four different wines - white, red, rose and Cava. That’s not all: also on the menu are some delicious regional cheeses and an exclusive Priorat olive oil to try.
With your appetite sated, settle back into your seat for the return journey to Barcelona and end your tour at Plaça Catalunya in the heart of the city center.
