What To Expect

Meet the chef at a central Barcelona location, then start with the fresh basics of Spanish cuisine, collecting fresh seafood from the local vendors and producers at La Boqueria, one of Barcelona’s most famous markets.

From the market, continue to a cooking school in El Born district, where you find an open kitchen, bar, and restaurant-style seating. Pour your first glass of sangria for the evening, then start preparing a range of tapas, or pintxos, classic Spanish small plates that are perfectly paired with wine.

With a chef cooking alongside you, start preparing the traditional paella, then as the rice dish simmers on a low flame, you can learn to mix your own sangria at a short drinks-making workshop. When the paella is done, sit down to the meal you’ve prepared, savoring the rich flavor of the rice and seafood (a non-seafood meal option is served by the chef for those who don’t eat seafood).

And if you’re not ready to finish the night, you're invited to a nearby bar, where you’ll be treated to a free "chupito," or shot, and enjoy drink specials throughout the evening.

Traveler Tips

Also for those of us who arrive timely, it's not fair to have to wait for people who can't seem to get anywhere at the required time!
Well worth it to take the time out and meet new friends in a very cozy environment.

We had a great time with this cooking class! The chef was very friendly and informative and the food came out great!
Recommend 10/10

We arrived to the kitchen late, but it was still so fun learning how to cook paella as well as make sangrias. I’d recommend to anyone who is interested in learning more about Spanish culture and cooking.

Learning to make the sangria was the best part of this experience. We enjoyed the information and meeting people from other parts of the world.

Our host was fantastic! Taught us so much about making Paella! He created a very warm and friendly atmosphere. It was fun to help create a wonderful meal!
Would not recommend.

Kocko was extremely rude. Dry humor and snapped at me and others. The building w the commercial kitchen was old and hot. He didn’t like being there. There was nothing personal or quaint about this experience. The bathroom was dirty. No toilet paper or soap. He was so cocky and sarcastic whenever someone asked a question or made a comment. There was not enough fish for 14 people. You basically eat rice for €55. Awful experience and would not recommend * Philippe was nice. He was helping in the kitchen. But cocko ruined it for us.
Not a cooking class by any means

Based on the website description of “make your own Spanish tapas”, “with a chef cooking along side you start preparing the traditional paella,”, “cook and eat a hearty paella”, “after dinner, enjoy a Chupito drink at a local bar” , I was really excited to purchase this experience for my family of 4 ($220 total cost). In reality, our experience consisted of a cooking demonstration of paella and sangria. At $57 per person, it is not worth the money. There was no preparing of tapas, as described in the advertisement for this experience. For 14 people, the tapas that was offered is pictured in my photo, 2 small boards of manchego cheese and hams. The chef, who was very kind and answered our questions, let us take turns stirring the paella and asked for a few volunteers to help him clean the mussels and cook them with the shrimp. That was the extent of “cooking”. At the end of the evening, there was no invitation to go enjoy a Chupito drink at a local bar, as I later read after the experience. For the $220 I spent for 4 people, it was a true disappointment, very misleading and if there is a way to request a partial refund, I would like to know because this experience was not at all as described.
Unique experience

Lots of fun ! Learned a lot Met great people Food and sangria came out awesome Enjoyed going to market to pick out seafood
There’s more to paella than you think!
Mohammad_A, Jul 2022
This cooking class was just fun. The people were great, the chef was truly a great guy too and we felt welcomed. I enjoyed picking up the fresh seafood before cooking and the most striking thing is that the chef can explain each and every single decision in detail and with a compelling reason for why that step was taken. Loved it!
Very disappointed
Jeff_R, Jul 2022
Never received it. Our guide never showed up. Multiple calls to him went unanswered. I was looking forward to this experience and it turned out to be a giant waste of time. If the class needed to be canceled I would understand and plan something else but instead waited an hour for someone who never came or answered the phone
Fun Experience!

I learned so many new cooking techniques during this experience, and I had a great time doing it! The instructor is knowledgeable, funny, and passionate about his cooking. He simply elevated the experience with his enthusiasm. Highly recommended to help make for a special visit to Barcelona!
Best cooking, eating and drinking experience. Met new friends and enjoyed the chef.

Our chef was very friendly and accommodating. My grandson did not care for the fish based Paella, so he made a smaller Vegetable Paella, and he let me have some of both. Both dishes were very good. The people in the group were strangers at first but we became good friends shortly into the appetizers and Sangria. All who wanted, participated in the cooking and the chef gave his recipe to us at the end of our cooking experience. We had eaten Paella in Madrid and this Paella was far superior.

My 10 year old little sister loved the cooking class and being able to participate in the cleaning of the seafood and the stirring of the paella. Our chef was very patient and funny and made the experience very enjoyable for everyone. He also always kept the sangria coming! HAHA

Fantastic meal!

Chef Kako was excellent. It was a wonderful evening and the paella was fantastic! The kitchen was very warm, but the flowing sangria helped cool us down.
Great experience. Highly Recommend!

Great experience. Awesome guide. Amazing food. We brought our 78 year-old mom on this experience for a delayed mother's day gift. She had a great time and we all enjoyed learning how to make a great dish together. Highly recommend!
OK, but wouldn't recommend
sarahbutler777, Jul 2022
It was a large group of 20 adults. The market visit was disappointing, simply stood at a seafood stall whilst chef purchased ingredients and then we all walked back like we were on a school trip. The class was fairly fun and we learnt some history of the dish. However, I feel the kitchen could've been cleaner and the group was too large. Also, the end product (paella) was disappointing for me (I've tasted much better) and I saw quite a few plates unfinished so I clearly wasn't the only one. I wouldn't choose this experience again as I think it's too expensive for what you actually do.
Didn't align with what was promised
Sally_M, Jul 2022
While the paella was excellent - the experience was not as promised and our group were all a bit disappointed. The group was larger than expected, especially with Covid protocols. It was a pretty long walk from the market to the kitchen. At times, it would have been helpful for guide to explain process and logistics of the event - a few times we were left waiting and unsure of what was happening. The "tapas" were a plate of potato chips and slices of meat and cheese - we thought we were going to learn how to make something which was a huge let down. We also did not make our own sangria as promised - and they lacked all the ingredients to make it (they only had a single can of Fanta, one of the IDed ingredients). We never received any recipes as promised, despite guide collecting email addresses. Many participants also felt uncomfortable with cleanliness and Covid protocols (a shrimp dropped on floor was rinsed and then cooked, we didn't cook individually so there was unease with strangers touching food consumed by everyone). I wish I had researched a bit more and instead signed up for an actual cooking class - this event did not align with the advertised promise.
Great seafood paella
Nijole_J, Jul 2022
We did this cooking class with friends and had a great time. Everyone had a chance to participate in the preparation of the meal, from going to the market to purchase the seafood, to making sangria, to making the paella. Our chef explained the process every step of the way and even made the recipe available for us to take home. A great way to experience cooking with a chef.
