What You Can Expect

Montserrat Monastery Tour from Barcelona Including Cogwheel Train Ride

Soak up the views from Montserrat's cog-wheel train

Explore one of Spain's most important religious sites at Montserrat, a monastery situated high above the city of Barcelona in greater Catalonia. The spot offers sublime views, a variety of religious artifacts, and insight into the history and spiritual traditions of this region of Spain.

Begin your excursion by boarding an air-conditioned coach in central Barcelona (Calle Balmes, 5) at 3pm, continuing on a ride through the scenic landscapes of Catalonia on your way to Montserrat. Your guide will provide details about the region's history as you go, offering details about the mountain of Montserrat and the monastery that lies near its peak.

Upon reaching the foot of the mountain, climb aboard a cogwheel train for the 15-minute climb to the peak, enjoying panoramic views along the way. Listen as your guide explains how hundreds of years of erosion have sculpted the striking pink rocks visitors see today. Make sure to also keep your camera handy for great shots of the mountain's unique rock formations with Barcelona and Catalonia in the distance.

Arrive at Santa Maria de Montserrat, the Benedictine abbey that occupies the mountaintop. Learn about the critical role the monastery plays in the cultural and spiritual traditions of Catalonia via an audiovisual presentation. Then check out the Royal Basilica of Monserrat, situated adjacent to the monastery. The Basilica is home to the 12th-century wooden carving of Our Lady of Monserrat, a sacred object also known as La Moreneta (the Dark One).

Spend some free time exploring the grounds at your leisure, stopping at the monastery gift shop for a tasting of four local liquors. Then head back to your air-conditioned coach for the trip back Barcelona, stopping at the original departure point.

Amazing tour. This is a very nice option if you do not have a full day to do this. If you however have enough time I would suggest spending more time there.

Fabulous tour, half day is great, church and monastery were really interesting and our guide was great. Bus trip down the mountain was very scary for me as I don't do heights very well. Cog wheel train up was fun and would have preferred to come down that way.

We would totally recommend this excursion. If you're in Barcelona, a trip to Monserrat is a must! This tour in particular was wonderful because the guide did a great job explaining things and taking us to different landmarks, but we also were given the opportunity to explore on our own. The free liquor tasting was also wonderful.

A must see for nature lovers, spiritual seekers and those who love architecture, all high in the mountains with spectacular views.

Our first time in a Cog-wheeled train. Riding it, we felt like kids. Our guide was cheerful and informative in spite of the pouring rain. You will feel like you are at one with nature. Even the air smells and tastes sweet, high up in the Montserrat Mountains. The views looking down into the valley below and the unimaginable rock formations formed over millions of years above, are breathtaking.

The silence leading up to the intimately self-contained sanctuary of The Black Madonna was sobering and spiritually uplifting as we walked past the Romanesque carving of Mary and Baby Jesus dating to the late 12th century. Your mind wanders to the pilgrims of past who flocked to see her over the centuries. You are left marveling at the devotion of those past craftsmen who built Montserrats monastery. A historical masterpiece celebrating a thousand years of its foundation as a monastery in 2025.

I thoroughly enjoyed this trip. The travel office was easy enough to find. Our tour guide Joanna was very knowledgeable and we had about an hour of free time which was long enough to look around the monestry and shops.
