What You Can Expect

Montserrat Monastery Tour from Barcelona Including Cogwheel Train Ride

Soak up the views from Montserrat's cog-wheel train

Explore one of Spain's most important religious sites at Montserrat, a monastery situated high above the city of Barcelona in greater Catalonia. The spot offers sublime views, a variety of religious artifacts, and insight into the history and spiritual traditions of this region of Spain.

Begin your excursion by boarding an air-conditioned coach in central Barcelona (Calle Balmes, 5) at 3pm, continuing on a ride through the scenic landscapes of Catalonia on your way to Montserrat. Your guide will provide details about the region's history as you go, offering details about the mountain of Montserrat and the monastery that lies near its peak.

Upon reaching the foot of the mountain, climb aboard a cogwheel train for the 15-minute climb to the peak, enjoying panoramic views along the way. Listen as your guide explains how hundreds of years of erosion have sculpted the striking pink rocks visitors see today. Make sure to also keep your camera handy for great shots of the mountain's unique rock formations with Barcelona and Catalonia in the distance.

Arrive at Santa Maria de Montserrat, the Benedictine abbey that occupies the mountaintop. Learn about the critical role the monastery plays in the cultural and spiritual traditions of Catalonia via an audiovisual presentation. Then check out the Royal Basilica of Monserrat, situated adjacent to the monastery. The Basilica is home to the 12th-century wooden carving of Our Lady of Monserrat, a sacred object also known as La Moreneta (the Dark One).

Spend some free time exploring the grounds at your leisure, stopping at the monastery gift shop for a tasting of four local liquors. Then head back to your air-conditioned coach for the trip back Barcelona, stopping at the original departure point.

Montserrat is quite unique. The rock formation stands out from the surrounding hills and mountains because of its strange shape. Some believe it was sawn by angels with a golden sword! The monastery itself is stunning architecture built by men of faith. Many want to touch the Madonna above and behind the altar. The views across the valley to Barcelona in the distance are breathtaking.
Took about 80 minutes to get there. Good knowledgeable guide - answered all questions. Ticket includes an audio-visual experience and 4 tastings of Benedictine liquers. Good cafe and souvenir shops. Trip on the cog wheel train down the mountain is quite an experience and an amazing feat of engineering.

We were during the referendum in Barcelona so we had to skirt the protests which were near the travel office. Our tour guide, Sari, was great and started the tour as we started to roll. She pointed out the sites in the city such as the Royal Palace, Olympic village and various architectural buildings. We decided to head up the trek to San Miguel for the view. If you go allow enough time at least 1/2 each way. We waited in line for the black Madonna. Well worth the tour.

This trip was absolutely amazing! The view was just breathtaking and there is so much history to be learnt here. The ride up to Montserrat was comfortable and our guide Naidimsp was great! He was so knowledgeable and quite patient! The liquor tasting was the topping to such a great adventure! This is a must do if in Barcelona!
