Explore one of Spain's most important religious sites at Montserrat, a monastery situated high above the city of Barcelona in greater Catalonia. The spot offers sublime views, a variety of religious artifacts, and insight into the history and spiritual traditions of this region of Spain.

Begin your excursion by boarding an air-conditioned coach in central Barcelona (Calle Balmes, 5) at 3pm, continuing on a ride through the scenic landscapes of Catalonia on your way to Montserrat. Your guide will provide details about the region's history as you go, offering details about the mountain of Montserrat and the monastery that lies near its peak.

Upon reaching the foot of the mountain, climb aboard a cogwheel train for the 15-minute climb to the peak, enjoying panoramic views along the way. Listen as your guide explains how hundreds of years of erosion have sculpted the striking pink rocks visitors see today. Make sure to also keep your camera handy for great shots of the mountain's unique rock formations with Barcelona and Catalonia in the distance.

Arrive at Santa Maria de Montserrat, the Benedictine abbey that occupies the mountaintop. Learn about the critical role the monastery plays in the cultural and spiritual traditions of Catalonia via an audiovisual presentation. Then check out the Royal Basilica of Monserrat, situated adjacent to the monastery. The Basilica is home to the 12th-century wooden carving of Our Lady of Monserrat, a sacred object also known as La Moreneta (the Dark One).

Spend some free time exploring the grounds at your leisure, stopping at the monastery gift shop for a tasting of four local liquors. Then head back to your air-conditioned coach for the trip back Barcelona, stopping at the original departure point.

The tour was super worth it. 3

The tour guide was excellent, but for my taste, I think I would have preferred to hike part way. I thought we were going to be able to go into the monastery, but that was not allowed. There was not a lot to say and other than a beautiful view, I’m not sure what the tour was really about....

Montserrat was great, the but value of the tour was reduced substantially as the guide's English was poor, and he mumbled constantly.

This is a great tour for someone who wants to visit Montserrat but not spend the whole day there. Our tour guide, Cecilia, did a great job narrating on the drive there then showing us around the area. We had a little over an hour of free time, and Cecilia explained our options of what to do with that time. It was a great tour.

The Montserrat Monastery is well-worth a visit. The view is spectacular and the Monastery is attractive. The tour itself was so-so. The guide was personable -- even adorable -- and had competent English too. Yet, she spoke in a spray of non-stop sentences, changed topics in an eye-blink and repeated herself over and over. She had no focus and lost her audience. I heard several seniors sitting nearby say that they could not follow her. The end result to this rambling was a loss of free time at the monastery. We were rushed and needed more time to look around. The tour was smooth, but I think I could have managed better on my own.

This excursion was somewhat of a disappointment. The ride to the location on the bus was very comfortable and convenient, which merits the two star rating. The guide was friendly, but only talked about 20 minutes. The rest of the time we were on our own, for a little over 90 minutes. The "cog" railroad was not something I expected. Instead of a quaint cog railroad, it was a modern electric train. Somewhat of a disappointment. We leaned later that busses run constantly between Barcelona and Monserrat, so we could have done that and saved some money.

The tour is good to provide you transportation to the monastery. The guy gave a talk along the way, but honestly it was my first day here and I was so tired from traveling over 24 hours that I fell asleep on the bus. When we got to the monastery he gave us a brief explanation of where we are not going to go and where we were going to meet afterward, then he took us around to all the different buildings to look at, and put us on our own. There was very little explanation of what we were seeing inside the different areas.

It was excellent, not to be missed and by the way it was not over charged. Breathtaking views and fresh air too .
