What To Expect

Explore one of Spain's most important religious sites at Montserrat, a monastery situated high above the city of Barcelona in greater Catalonia. The spot offers sublime views, a variety of religious artifacts, and insight into the history and spiritual traditions of this region of Spain.

Begin your excursion by boarding an air-conditioned coach in central Barcelona, continuing on a ride through the scenic landscapes of Catalonia on your way to Montserrat. Your guide provides details about the region's history as you go, offering details about the mountain of Montserrat and the monastery that lies near its peak.

Upon reaching the foot of the mountain, climb aboard a cogwheel train for the climb to the peak, enjoying panoramic views along the way. Listen as your guide explains how hundreds of years of erosion have sculpted the striking pink rocks visitors see today. Make sure to also keep your camera handy for great shots of the mountain's unique rock formations with Barcelona and Catalonia in the distance.

Arrive at Santa Maria de Montserrat, the Benedictine abbey that occupies the mountaintop. Learn about the critical role the monastery plays in the cultural and spiritual traditions of Catalonia via an audiovisual presentation. Then check out the Royal Basilica of Montserrat, situated adjacent to the monastery. The Basilica is home to the 12th-century wooden carving of Our Lady of Montserrat, a sacred object also known as La Moreneta (the Dark One).

Spend some free time exploring the grounds at your leisure, stopping at the monastery gift shop for a tasting of three local liquors. Then head back to your air-conditioned coach for the trip back Barcelona, stopping at the original departure point.

Worth the money
Tammy_F, May 2023
Tour guide Danny & Carlos were wonderful. The train ride was very pleasant, the monastery was incredible and the views were breathtaking! This was definitely worth the money.
Out of city experience
Jayson_J, May 2023
The scenery outside and the church inside were beautiful. The Black Madonna was a unique experience.
Great Guide
Myra_H, May 2023
Our Guide was very informative and extremely helpful. Bus was very comfortable.. Cog wheel train was a nice touch. Area was beautiful and the buildings were stunning. Ear bud headphones were provided but as I wear hearing aids these weren't suitable for me, I would prefer another type of headphone.

Enjoyable Experience

We thoroughly enjoyed our half day tour at Monserrat. Fascinating! For us the 1/2 day was enough. We felt we had plenty of time.

Kelsea_B, May 2023
The location was fantastic and beautiful. Definitely worth the half day trip outside Barcelona. However, the tour however, felt we paid for essentially a coach bus for transport. Got minimal information from the tour guide where we felt we were in a very historical and monumental area.

A Somewhat Average Tour in a Trip That Included Great Tours
Charlotte_C, May 2023
This tour was not that good. Just average. Went in the afternoon, was not able to see all that was promised.
The worst guide
MariaC_B, May 2023
Montserrat is a wonderful place to visit, with so much to see and learn. However, the guide insisted we needed to start the visit with a visit to the shop and liquor tasting that lasted a long time. He did not explain anything about the history of the place and kept talking about the liquor tasting. It is really a waste of time to take this tour. If you want to visit this wonderful place take another tour.
Goof experience

Stunning monastery
Vivian_v, May 2023
The train trip was great but unfortunately only one way. The guides were difficult to hear. The area and monastery is spectacular
Stephanie_S, May 2023
Outstanding views. The monastery & surrounding areas were pristine & well maintained. Do tell those going that it can get quite cool/cold based on the high elevation. Would absolutely recommend!

A good experience esp the train ride
Sonia_G, May 2023
The monastery was quite a distance from Barcelona. Very happy for the tour rather than doing it on our own. Caroline, our guide, was very good - very informative.
Have to visit
Nadezhda_L, May 2023
The tour is well organized, tour bus and train are very comfortable. Only 50 min from Barcelona. Includes visit to the monastery itself but not included visit to Basilica. You are going to need an extra ticket if you are interested in visiting. Also, there are very nice walking trails paved and not paved in the mountains around the monastery, if you like to explore those , you will not have time to do that if you are booking 2 hr tour. Choose one that gives you more free time. Overall great experience.
reischl5, May 2023
Very disappointed - we arrived late afternoon and after the short tour the museum was closed so missed out on that. The guide was very frustrating. Overall not a good experience.

Wonderful experience
Karen_B, May 2023
Very efficient transport to a unique abbey. Impressed with the church and history . But please use air conditioning in bus and 30 minutes of free time as we felt rushed.
Too much bus time
Kim_S, May 2023
Beautiful mountain a lot of driving time & not enough time at the mountain. Paid for your but got little history of mountain, they said go in history museum & read. Was disappointed that not more information by guide.

Views from train, basilica outside and in- all awe inspiring! Visit was a little rushed- would have liked more time to wander around the many lovely buildings and maybe take the funicular to the top!

Beautiful natural area, great views of valley below as the cogwheel train drives up the mountain. Very ornate chapel. Could have used more time at the facility to see other attractions, shops.

Beautiful special place
Ronald_D, Apr 2023
Loved everything from the wonderful tour guide, the train ride and the energy of the mountain. It was memorable and I hope to return some day!
Not so good
Daniel_K, Apr 2023
Guide wasn't very good with English and seemed not very knowledgeable. Liquor experience didn't happen. Would recommend doing the same place taking the metro.
They were not prepared...
Donald_H, Apr 2023
They were not prepared scripts for us. We thought we d meet at that location at six pm but it was at different location. Thought we d go back on the cogs wheel. Also, meeting point at the Barcelona Nord Station was not a good idea. Not good location - it would be better if they drive smaller shuttle to pick us up and then bring us to the meeting point. So disappointing! Need to improve and better service for the customers.
