What You Can Expect

Montserrat Royal Basilica Half-Day Trip from Barcelona

Montserrat Royal Basilica Half-Day Trip from Barcelona

Meet your guide at Calle Balmes, 5 in central Barcelona. Depart by air-conditioned coach and head to the mountain of Montserrat, a cluster of cone-like peaks that reach up to 4,051 feet (1,235 meters) in height to the north of the city.

As you travel, pass through scenic villages and hear tales from your guide about Montserrat’s main claim-to-fame — the magnificent Royal Basilica and Monastery of Montserrat. The mountainside church and Benedictine abbey is best known for its Black Madonna (La Moroneta), a statue of the Virgin Mary that has made it one of Spain’s most popular pilgrimage sites for centuries.

Admire the epic landscapes as you ascend the mountain, and on arrival, take in the views over the countryside and Barcelona. Then, after an introduction to Montserrat’s history, use your entrance ticket to head inside and enjoy free time to explore.

Explore the vast basilica and its echoing interior, see the revered Black Madonna, a small wooden statue housed in small room, and learn the story behind this hallowed sculpture. Then, if time allows, walk up to the grotto, traditionally said to be where the statue was discovered.

If your tour is on a weekday (select dates only), perhaps hear a recital by the Escolania, one of the most renowned boys’ choirs in Europe. You can also opt for a walk through Montserrat’s audiovisual museum to learn about the daily life of the monks, finishing at the gift shop to taste and perhaps buy some of the traditional liquors made at the monastery.

After roughly 2.5 hours of exploring independently, return to Barcelona by coach where your trip ends.

Montserrat was an excellent trip. On the way to Montserrat, Mark, our guide, gave us lots of great information. It was lovely to see. The only downside was that Mark fell and broke his leg. I certainly hope he is doing well.

The tour itself was great, I only wished we had more time to explore. There is so much to see and the Basilica is beautiful, if you are lucky to be there when the choir is singing don't miss it, it is amazing.
Can't wait to go back for a full day trip.
Our Tour guide was great and very very knowledgeable.

We thoroughly enjoyed this tour. The was a great fog when we arrived at the top, so that we could not see more than 10 feet in front of us. This gave an interesting ambiance - the fog slowly lifted as the morning went on, revealing the mountain side and fantastic views of the basilica. We stood in line to touch the Madonna statue and the boys choir performed as we reached the area in front with the statue. We enjoyed walking around the area and the views on the ride back down the mountain. We highly recommend this tour.

Absolutely fabulous tour. Our bi-lingual Spanish/English guides Suzanna and Cristina on the 18th of January were very courteous, knowledgeable and fun. Our driver completed the tour package with his excellent driving both going and coming. Thank you!.
The vista alone is worth the trip.

Very nice place to visit. The half day seemed like plenty of time to see everything, including the children and #39;s choir, which was pretty amazing.

A wonderful tour, but should have more time in Montserrat. There was so much to do and we had to race around trying to fit everything I but couldn't. We didn't have time to eat or look at the market stalls and we rushed everything we did see.
The mountains are superb, and so much to do there. Definitely recommend taking the funicular to the top.
