Overview

Explore the Royal Basilica and Monastery of Montserrat independently on this 5.5-hour trip from Barcelona. Travel by coach to the spectacular, mountainside Benedictine abbey, one of Spain’s most popular pilgrimage sites for its revered Black Madonna statue. Then, enjoy free time to explore, making this one of the most flexible Montserrat tours from Barcelona available. Admire the views from the mountainside, see the vast basilica and venerated statue, visit the audiovisual museum, and perhaps hear the Escolania, one of Europe’s best-known boys’ choirs before your return to Barcelona.
  • Half-day trip to the Royal Basilica of Montserrat from Barcelona
  • Explore the basilica independently and see its 12th-century carving of the Black Virgin
  • Enjoy spectacular views from the Montserrat mountains
  • Learn about Montserrat’s history from a guide
  • Relax with transportation by deluxe air-conditioned coach
  • Tasting of 4 typical liquors
Meet your guide at Calle Balmes, 5 in central Barcelona. Depart by air-conditioned coach and head to the mountain of Montserrat, a cluster of cone-like peaks that reach up to 4,051 feet (1,235 meters) in height to the north of the city.

As you travel, pass through scenic villages and hear tales from your guide about Montserrat’s main claim-to-fame — the magnificent Royal Basilica and Monastery of Montserrat. The mountainside church and Benedictine abbey is best known for its Black Madonna (La Moroneta), a statue of the Virgin Mary that has made it one of Spain’s most popular pilgrimage sites for centuries.

Admire the epic landscapes as you ascend the mountain, and on arrival, take in the views over the countryside and Barcelona. Then, after an introduction to Montserrat’s history, use your entrance ticket to head inside and enjoy free time to explore.

Explore the vast basilica and its echoing interior, see the revered Black Madonna, a small wooden statue housed in small room, and learn the story behind this hallowed sculpture. Then, if time allows, walk up to the grotto, traditionally said to be where the statue was discovered.

If your tour is on a weekday (select dates only), perhaps hear a recital by the Escolania, one of the most renowned boys’ choirs in Europe. You can also opt for a walk through Montserrat’s audiovisual museum to learn about the daily life of the monks, finishing at the gift shop to taste and perhaps buy some of the traditional liquors made at the monastery.

After roughly 2.5 hours of exploring independently, return to Barcelona by coach where your trip ends.

Great tour! Super crowded spot.

Neither English nor Spanish were our tour guides first language (she was Russian), so giving information seemed like a struggle; and because of that we didn't get much. In the 45 minute drive to Monserrat, it would have been helpful if she'd outlined our options so we could have gotten to do the things we wanted. By the time we realized we weren't going to get any real information following her around (and we couldn't get into the cathedral or see the Black Virgin until 12:30 because some special event was taking place), we only had enough time to go up on the funicular but not walk out to the point, or walk down from the top. I think we would have been happier, and gotten more out of the visiting Monserrat, if we'd gotten transportation and a guide book.

Not well organized. We were not given time to do anything. We could not listen to the boys choir which started at 1, we could not do the hike nor could we go down the funicular because of the limited time given. We knew we could do so much, but we were told to be in the bus by 1.23 pm sharp.

There are not enough words to describe this breath taking, majestic, spiritual place. As we were driving up to the top, we were looking down over mountain peaks and clouds! OMG! The mountain peaks by the church entrance look like they were carved and angels and as if saints are looking over you! My number 1 regret is that I only booked a half day tour! I didn't have the time to get into the church! Long lines. I missed the boys Esconolia choir's little concert, along with the monastaries. I also missed seeing the ancient found in year 808 I believe wood carving of the Blessed Virgin Mary. I did see the statue of St. Jerome who's eyes are like the Mona Lisa always following you looking over you. There's so much to see there! Everyone there walks around in hushed awe! I MUST go back! Thank you Viator for a truly wonderful experience and a very knowledgeable Sweet guide Ruth and the driver! She and the expert driver deserve HEAPS of praise and acknowledgement for her most dedicated work and care of and for us! Thank you Ruth and driver!
Yes, Viator does a GREAT job with tours, guides, drivers, and exceptional experiences! I'll book again with them!
Thank you so much!

Our guide was obviously much more fluent in Spanish than English on this bilingual tour. .not really a surprise, but to the point it was not easy to understand a fair amount of what she was saying. She did seem knowledgeable. We expected a fair amount of time to explore from the description, but ended feeling the actual time at the site was somewhat compressed. We did hear the boys choir sing their brief appearance but be warned the Basilica will be JAMMED. Still, would bee a shame to visit area and not see.

Booked through Viator yes, I was a little lazy if I would have searched for travel agents I hope I would have found Julia. I booked half day morning tour. Modern clean bus, excellent bus driver...not a fan of bus travel driver was the BEST! Very good tour guide knowledgeable Thank you Laura for a nice trip. 9:15am show time, confirmation ticket came with easy instructions where to show up. Counter staff at Julia were nice, just had to check in really didn't have much dealing with them. Only problem with tour, arrived at Montserrat around 10am or so made our way to Basilica 10:30am-12pm Basilica and door to Black Virgin closed till 12pm!! Thought that a little strange, so you just walk around kill time till noon, then meet tour guide at 1:15pm.

This tour is the perfect combination of a guided tour and time to explore Montserrat on your own. Our guide Ana was very friendly and knowledgeable, she gave information on the drive and on a short tour when we arrived in Montserrat. We had wanted to be able to take the funicular to the top and hike back down and we had plenty of time to do that. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants some flexibility to explore Montserrat!
