Beijing Private Hutong Food Walking Tour
Doreen H

We are so glad we booked our Private Hutong Food Walking Tour with Viator. It was our very first day in Beijing. Our tour guide was Jimmy who we liked very much. He was friendly, informative and spoke English very well. It was hard to find people who speaks English in Beijing. He gave us an introduction of the hutongs, the alleyways in the traditional residential area of Beijing. We enjoyed it very much. He took us to many restaurants. We had a hot pot lunch with a large variety of seafood, meat and vegetables. We had another meal with chicken, noodles and vegetables. We got to try street food and watch them make our crepe sandwiches. We went to a place to try pork intestines which was their specialty. We also had excellent Xiao Long Bao at a dumpling restaurant. All four of us were stuffed. We made a mistake of eating breakfast in the morning before the tour. We had a great time. This is a perfect tour for an introduction to Beijing.

This was a well thought out tour. Unlike most food tours, there was large quantities of food provided. The tour was private which allowed me to establish a friendship with the tour guide. I asked many questions along the way and they all were answered with great insight. The guide was very experienced and made me feel very comfortable.

Excellent guide who led us to places we would not have found ourselves. A lot of tasty food. Be sure not to have dinner before! Would highly recommend this tour.

I got myself onto this hutong food walking tour initially to fill my day, as I was transiting elsewhere in Asia. This was my very first day ever in Beijing and I did not regret taking the tour. Lucy was my guide, she was spot on time and very friendly, I felt like meeting an old university friend or an ex-colleague. Lucy took me in areas at walking distance from Wangfujing. To start with, Lucy gave me a much-needed introduction to the hutongs and some aspect of Beijing which came very handing later. During the tour, Lucy picked a variety of places which then provided a large sample of Chinese food. Then, been a foodie person it was heaven on earth as everything I tried was delicious. So, if you're a food lover and like to try different things, then I would recommend this tour to give you an idea of what to expect.

A Tasty Tour of Beijing

We enjoyed a night tour of the Hutongs with our guide Jimmy. His highly personable nature and ease with English made for a wonderful experience. We were able to sample a variety of the local fare, including a modern hot pot, traditional hand stretched noodles, and a surprising lamb kebab and naan. The tour included some wonderful street fare, including a stop for some delicious pastries and a tasty savory pancake. And mixed in were a few local (unusual from and American perspective) dishes promoting good health. Jimmy was very accommodating to our preferences, and we really enjoyed exploring the local streets of Beijing with the assurance of a guide at our side to make sure we could find our way back to the hotel.

Jimmy, our tour guide, was knowledge...

Jimmy, our tour guide, was knowledge about the Hutong around Beijing. He explained all of the dishes we ate with the cultural significance of the dish. It was fun to try the different dishes, but some of them were a little challenging for our stomachs. We really enjoyed the crabapples and the soup. We did not enjoy the dishes that were seasoned with curry. We wanted authentic Chinese food, not food that tasted like Indian food. We enjoyed the cold beer.
