After hotel pickup by your driver in Beijing, your tour starts with the 50-mile (75-km) drive to the Great Wall at Mutianyu, one of the wall's best-preserved sections, built under the direction of General Xu Da.
When you arrive after about 90 minutes, begin your self-guided hike; the round-trip journey is 3.7 miles (6 km) and takes about two hours. If you wish to save some energy, you can take the cable car up (own expense), or just hike up the side of the mountain. Then stroll along the wall itself, passing by watchtowers for different views. To get down from the wall, either walk, take the cable car, or ride the toboggan (own expense).
No matter which method you choose, the main attraction is enjoying the beauty of the wall set amid the mountains and dense woods. When you finish hiking, your driver takes you back to Beijing for hotel drop-off.
