The adventure begins with morning pickup at your Belize City hotel, the cruise port or the water taxi terminal and a roughly 1-hour drive north to reach the celebrated archaeological site of Altun Ha. This ancient Mayan city was once a powerful Meso-American trading community and ceremonial site and drew international attention when a large jade icon was excavated from a tomb the 1960s.
Explore the site with your guide and learn about the rulers, priests and astronomers who once lived and gathered here. Climb some of the stone pyramids that rise majestically out of the jungle, and hear theories about the civilization’s collapse. After your archaeological expedition, recharge with a traditional Belizean-style lunch and cooling refreshments.
Next, take a walk on the wild side at the Community Baboon Sanctuary, a grassroots conservation project that protects the natural habitat of more than 2,000 wild black howler monkeys (locally called ‘baboons’). See the screeching creatures hanging out in trees and crossing over a special rope ladder bridge, and feel good knowing that your visit contributes to the protection of these amazing animals. Relax on the ride back to Belize City, where the tour concludes with drop-off back at your original departure point.
