I could say that the best part of this tour was being guided around the city to some beautiful locations being told, in brief, but ample detail, about the city, its history, current and past culture, but it's not quite that. I could say that the best part was being told, sometimes in intimate detail, about how dark and yet progressive Berlin's history has been and now is, but again, it wouldn't be that. Or perhaps the sage advice of where to eat, where to visit on our short trip and places to get great, local beer? Not quite.

The best part was the tour guide, JJ. Jam-packed full of charm, cheekiness and humour, he really lifted this tour, and I have been on some where the guide is dull and just reading off a load of facts. JJ is clearly in love with Berlin and whether he was talking passionately about the Brandenburg Gate, the remaining Nazi buildings, the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie all on the tour, plus more or his Irish, ABBA-loving, You're-not-eating-enough-potatoes mother, Caroline O'Leary he's doing a grand job, Mrs. O'Leary, promise!, I not only got a sense of the horror of its past, but also the pleasures of its present all through our magnetic racconteur, JJ.

It is a 4-hour walking tour, but it goes by quickly and there is a coffee break in between. Can't recommend these guys enough.

Maria had an amazing historical knowledge of Berlin and interspersed interesting related anecdotes that made the tour fascinating. She stopped at important historical sites in East Berlin, relating the various historical significances over the generations, while also pointing out other related points of interest. Although our group was 40, Maria's voice was strong enough to make her heard by the group. We wished our stay in Berlin was longer so we could have signed up for additional tours. Maria was great!
