Discover Potsdam Walking Tour

Get a taste for the beautiful architecture and fascinating royal heritage of Potsdam during this 6-hour walking tour from Berlin. Over the course of your stroll through this picturesque city you’ll get a sense for German history as you wander past the city’s wealth of royal palaces, castles and parks.
Start your trip at 9:40am outside the Berlin Zoo Station, where you’ll meet your guide. From there you’ll proceed by public transport (at your own expense) for about 1 hour, headed approximately 15 miles (24km) outside the city center to Potsdam. Once you arrive, follow along with your guide as you explore the fairy-tale architecture of this unique city, once the home to German royalty.
Stop by the palace of Cecilienhof, the site of the famous 1945 conference between the United States, Soviet Union and United Kingdom, then check out the castle of Babelsberg and the re-created Greek temple at the Marble Palace. You’ll also have the chance to see a variety of architecture built in a variety of styles from around the world, including a traditional Russian village, Italian renaissance-style churches and 18th-century Dutch buildings.
Though Potsdam exhibits a variety of “fantasy” architecture, the realities of the 20th century proved to be a dose of harsh reality for its residents. Learn about the legendary 1945 Potsdam Conference that sealed the fate of Germany and Europe, setting up the Cold War that soon followed. Then cross the “spy swap” bridge where American U-2 pilot Gary Powers was traded in 1962, and visit the location of the KGB Prison, situated in an area once known as “Forbidden Town.” You’ll also see the infamous former Stasi Prison, once run by East Germany’s feared secret police.
End your walking tour back in the majestic landscape of Sanssouci Park and Palace, a complex whose name means “Without a Care!” which was built by German leader Frederick the Great in the 18th century. Your tour ends here, allowing you the option to continue your visit on your own or return to Berlin with your guide.

Thoroughly enjoyed the whole day. Great experience catching local trains, tram and buses as well as walking the pathways and streets that make up Potsdam region. Our guide was a fountain of knowledge who took personal interest in each one of us to ensure we got max value. Would freely recommend this tour to any able bodied person. We did walk over 14 km that day. If you do go, where covered shoes as the gravel on open toe shoes is not good

Potsdam is definitely a mustsee. Its historical background is pretty complex and it is very interesting and satisfying to see German history as a whole. And our tour guide Jess was brilliant. As he is a graduate history student, he transfers his knowledge pretty objective and visual material he uses is quite subsidiary in remembering all of the figures. Most of all, his approach to all of us was quite kind and talkative. Though being exhaustive, we enjoyed the tour so much

Great tour
Really informative and helpful guide and got to see all the highlights of Potsdam

Our guide also gave us a good grounding in how to use the trains so we stayed a few afterwards to see the Sansouci palace and easily made our way back to Berlin

Highly recommend it

This tour was one of the highlights of my recent European vacation! I was not too familiar with Potsdam or German history prior to this tour, and the experience has made me excited to learn even more than I did with the group.

Our guide, Jess, is an American graduate student studying history, and I could not recommend his tour highly enough. At the outset he made it clear that German history can be very confusing, but he found a way to make everything exciting and lively, he found the humor and relatable elements in a historical legacy that goes back several hundred years.

This tour is a HIKE. It was a longer walk than we'd experienced on our other tours, and on a much hotter day, but my girlfriend and I were thrilled with the experience. We got to see and experience much more than we would've in a bus, and it proved more immersive to walk through a number of places that have experienced a number of highs and lows throughout history.

Great tour, great guide...do not hesitate, book this tour!
