Discover Potsdam Walking Tour

Start your trip outside Berlin’s Hackescher Markt Station. Join up with your guide and take a 15-mile (24km) train journey outside the city center to Potsdam, once the home to German royalty.

Stop by the palace of Cecilienhof, the site of the famous 1945 conference between the United States, Soviet Union, and United Kingdom, where Truman, Churchill, and Stalin would seal Germany and Europe’s fate for the 20th Century, laying the groundwork for the Cold War. Continue to King Frederick William II’s Marble Palace, with its recreated Greek temple and scenic lakeside setting. From there, make your way through the 18th-century Nauener Gate and into Potsdam’s quaint Dutch quarter.

Break for lunch at your choice of several cafes in Potsdam’s town center. Stop off for a German beer or try some traditional coffee and cake. Once you’ve refueled, make your way through Potsdam’s own Brandenburg Gate (built before Berlin’s) to a UNESCO World Heritage Site: Frederick the Great’s Sanssouci Palace and Gardens.

Your walking tour will finish next to the Sanssouci Palace. Your guide will then take you on public transportation back to Berlin or, if you prefer, you can stay in Potsdam on your own to enjoy more of the gardens, visit the inside of one of the palaces, or even stay for dinner.

Excellent tour covering a range of places of historical interest and lovely areas. The history stretched from the 17th/18th century right through to the cold war. The area itself was outstanding with Palaces , Lakes, Rivers and fascinating old town.

Our guide, Torben was extremely knowledgeable and provided the right level of insight into all the features of the tour and their historical context. If you needed to go into the detail on a particular point he was happy to do so.

Definitely not to be missed!!! Potsdam is a lovely place and the best way to see it is by walking around it and we were lucky enough to have had beautiful weather. The itinerary of this tour is true to the word. Our guide Walter was well-organised, practical, friendly, and very knowledgeable, injecting sufficient humour to keep us interested and wanting to know more. These characteristics contributed much towards the success of the tour. . Although the tour ended with the Palace one can easily stay there to explore it further and getting back to Berlin is very easy. It is an-going tour but not difficult or stressful. We do suggest though that a slightly longer rest an hour instead of half would give one enough time to enjoy a more relaxed lunch.

This trip is a great contrast from a day in the city. The train journey to Potsdam was very pleasant. Our guide, Matti, described Potsdam as the Disneyworld of its day and I could understand why. Not all that you see is as old or original as you might think! The town is so quaint that you could almost believe that you are in Disney's Celebration town. However all that you see in the town is original. The trip was so interesting and gave a great insight into the competitiveness of the monarchs and the power which they wielded. The Bridge of Spies brought home the terrible conditions which those trapped in the East had to endure if they thought about escaping. The grounds are beautiful to walk through and the Sansoucci Palace is worth the visit. Matti made the day very interesting and is very knowledgeable.
