What You Can Expect

Big Island in A Day: Volcanoes, Waterfalls, Sightseeing, History, Small Group

Explore the Thurston Lava Tubes on this all day tour.

This full day adventure of the Big Island of Hawaii begins on the Kona coast, where you’re picked up from your Kona or Waikoloa hotel, and driven north on a scenic journey past historic Parker Ranch—which has operated as one of the largest ranches in America since 1847.

As you pass through the ranching town of Waimea, watch as the landscape changes from pastures to green, tropical rainforest, as sweeping views of the Hamakua Coast start creeping into view. During a stop at Waipio Valley lookout, marvel at the way the vertical cliffs seem to explode from the green valley floor, and hear the tales of how King Kamehameha was raised in this valley as a child. The adventure continues as you wind your way down the Hamakua Coast, past roadside towns with singsong names until you reach Akaka Falls.

Here at this popular Hawaii State Park, watch as a 442 foot (135m) waterfall explodes in the pool down below, and later on, at Rainbow Falls, watch as the light refracts through the mist to form a rainbow in the sky. Around this time, you’ll enjoy a lunch of teriyaki chicken, grilled fish, seaweed salad, and rice (vegetarian meals available upon request) beneath the shade of a banyan tree.

Heading south past the town of Hilo, you’ll head to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the active Kilauea volcano, to hike through the Thurston Lava Tube that was formed by cooling lava. Walk through the steam vents and lunar landscape of Halema’uma’u Crater, and visit the informative Jaggar Museum for info on the current eruption. Depending upon the volcanic activity, there could even be parts of the park where it’s possible to see the magma in action, though it’s more than enough to marvel at the formations the lava has left behind.

From the often-cool summit of Kilauea, you’ll eventually make your way back towards sea level at Punalu’u State Park, where you’ll take a stroll on a black-sand beach and search for Hawaiian green sea turtles. Rounding the southern tip of the island, which is the southernmost point in America, the sun will begin to get low in the sky. Look out for Kealakekua Bay, the spot where Captain Cook was killed in a skirmish with Native Hawaiians. Finally, the tour finishes back in Kona with a drop off at your hotel, where you’ve earned the right to plop on the bed and relax after the full day adventure.

Please note: Bring good hiking shoes, as well as multiple layers of clothing since the temperature and weather can vary.

I can not praise my tour guide Keith enough. He started out making me feel at ease the moment he picked me up. Since I took the tour without my family I felt some what alone, he interacted with everybody was friendly, accommodating, funny, knowledgeable about not just the history of Hawaii, but many other things i.e. plants and wild life, food. I am limited due to a handicap, he showed concern and patience, made sure everybody that wanted their picture taken he saw to that as well . Lunch was delicious, the sights breathtaking and the tour more than I ever expected. I recommend Wasabi tours on the Big Island to everybody. Keith truly has his heart in his work and Hawaii. He also did one extra thing and dropped me off where I stayed and saved me a long walk. Because of Keith I went home with wonderful memories . Thank you Keith, Thanks Wasabi Tours and thank you Viator Booking for the excellent choice.

The Big Island Tour with Daniel, was nothing short of amazing. Perfect if you dont have a rental...or even if you do. Saw so many amazing sights, and Daniel was super knowledgeable and very nice/funny. His voice is sooo soothing, it goes really well with the island's vibes. The meal served on the tour was REALLY good...and so were the other random eateries we encountered along the way. Will def be recommending this tour to my friends visiting the Big Island. Mahalo!

I picked Grand Circle Island Tour to see Hawaii Island for its landscapes, beaches, waterfalls, towns and volcanos. What I got was a lot more. We were a small group of 8, and led by an amazing tour/ driver, Dreu from Wasabi Tours. With Dreu at the driver's seat literally, we heard and learnt about the Hawaiian culture, language, history, back stories of places and towns, local nature and habitats, and even up to the minute news that affected the state around the time.

The highlights of the tour included everything that was listed on the itinerary and more. We factored in an additional hour with our small group and had a detour to Punalu'u Bake Shop for free samples of local sweet bread and masaladas. The tour was perfect, from spectacular view of Kilaueu Caldera, watching turtles at Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, caught the rain in Hilo, and graced with two rainbows at Waipio Valley to sum up the tour in the evening. Truly memorable.

Pau' and mahalo

Our guide, Ryan Wilson gave us an amazing experience on the Big Island day tour.

This tour is a good orientation to the island and great for people who have no transport. Several people were a little irritating but that is tour conditions and they did not spoil the experience. Lunch was good and the fact that our tour guide shared the left over picnic boxes with a family not on our tour because they would go to waste otherwise....he did offer them to us first but they were very filling....was a nice gesture

Perfect for everyone. The beach is something else! The turtles came to greet us and we split a coconut, enjoyed the fresh tangerines and wandered over to a pond. The diversity is unheard of.

This tour was a highlight of my week vacation on the big island. I really felt I was able to explore most of the island and see so much diversity with the tour. Ryan was the tour guide we had and he was nice, funny, and knew a lot of information about the island. It is hard to say what my favorite part was just because we saw so many great things. The island takes a while to get around, so there was a lot of driving, but the van had a lot of room and was comfortable. This tour gave me a better feel of what Hawaii looks like by getting to drive around. And at lunch the food was good, and seemed to be a traditional Hawaii meal. I would recommend this tour to anyone who loves exploring, and seeing beautiful scenery.
