Roll out of bed for convenient pickup right outside your hotel in the predawn hours of the morning. Climb into a comfortable tour vehicle and snooze or watch the volcanic terrain glide by as you ride about 30 minutes to the flanks of Mauna Kea.
Travel along the Saddle Road that runs between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, lined with both rainforest and subalpine dry forest. Once you reach a stopping point partway, eat a breakfast of oatmeal and hot coffee while you acclimate to the atmosphere at 9,200 feet (2,804 meters).
Continue another half hour to the top while listening to your guide's thoughtful commentary about the volcanic environment. Once you've arrived at 13,796 feet (4,205 meters), you'll be able to watch the sunrise and peer through an array of world-class telescopes.
End your tour with drop-off back at your hotel.
