Great Tour! Laurence and Lori the tour guides were amazing. The hike across the crater was great. It wasn't very difficult, but the footing is a little uneven ... They went at a modest pace and they had hiking sticks that we could use which was really helpful. After the hike we had time to visit the vistors center, the art house and the Jagger Museum which were very informative. The BBQ Dinner and the wine tasting at the winery were good. The guides took really good care of us and were well prepared for all eventualities...my camera ran out of power and they had an extra battery to recharge it. They also had extra coats to ward off the chill for those of us who were a little underdresed for the evening glow portion of the tour! It gets quite a bit cooler when the sun sets. Overall, I would highly recommend the tour!
This was an amazing experience. I visited the Big Island 12 years ago and saw folks hiking the crater. Ever since, I have wanted to do this. We went with the Viator recommended company, Kapohokine Adventures and had the BEST experience.
Our guide, Mark Rico, was fabulous! He told us so much about the foliage, animals and history of the island and the crater. He was very solicitous, making sure that everyone in our party was hiking at an appropriate pace for their physical condition and keeping us well hydrated. Mark made sure we were comfortable the entire trip. Lunch near the observatory was tasty. We had wild Ohala berries for dessert, right off the bush. Not your typical experience.
The hike across the crater was not as strenuous as I thought it would be, but the last part going back up on switchback after switchback was somewhat challenging. Take your time and you will be fine. Mark saw we were tiring and went ahead to bring the van as close as possible to the end of the trail. He even ran back to bring us cold water. You can't ask for more.
At our request, Mark took us down Chain of Craters Road instead of to the museum. It was well worth the trip to see the Sea Arch again and Nenes flying across the road. We then went to the lava lake to see the promised glow. Another otherworldly event with lava popping and smoke billowing. I hope some of my pictures will show Pele's face. She truly gave us perfect weather and views.
Dinner afterwards at the Volcanoes Winery was good and the tour informative. I enjoyed the Hawaiian style chicken and ribs. The wines are different due to the soil and growing conditions. The Symphony Dry fit my preference for white wine the best.
We could not have as much fun if we had done this ourselves. Don't pass this up. You can't go wrong with this tour.
Amazing walk down the crater and back up. Our guide Jon was very knowledgable about all the plants and the area. He also showed us the off the path area where we wouldn and #39;t known on our own walk. Highly rec!!!
A good hike and worth the money
