Begin your Big Island Circle Tour with pickup at your Kona accommodation. Meet your guide and climb aboard the Mercedes Benz Sprinter Van which seats up to 11 people. Traveling on a private tour ensures personal attention from your guide and the opportunity to ask questions along the way.

Journey across the island on Saddle Road; take note of the dramatic weather variations and elevation changes. As you travel, watch educational videos on the van's DVD player about Hawaii's history, culture and traditions.

Stop at the impressive Rainbow Falls outside of Hilo, then head for the rainforest, waterfalls and sheer sea cliffs of the Hamakua heritage coast. In Hilo, see where the tsunamis of 1946 and 1960 hit the city, then explore the 30-acre (12-hectare) Liliuokalani Japanese Gardens.

Next up is the tour's highlight: a visit to Volcanoes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you will see the Jagger Museum, a volcanic caldera and the Thurston Lava Tube. Continue to the Punalu'u black sand beach, a favorite hangout for the Hawaiian green sea turtles.

Stop at South Point, the United States' most southern point, where they Polynesians made their Hawaiian landing on the dramatic sea cliffs a thousand years ago. Take a tour of the Painted Church and drive down to the overlook, from which you can see the spot where Captain Cook fell in 1779.

Cruise back up the scenic Kona coast for drop-off at your accommodation.
