Why Travelers Choose This Tour

This tour includes free use of an iPad for learning about attractions and taking photos.
This Kona volcano tour begins at your hotel in either Kona or Waikoloa, where you board a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle for the journey to Kilauea volcano.

Along the way, stop at the 'coffee belt' in the cool uplands above Kona, and enjoy a cup of Kona coffee on a plantation right where it’s grown. Enjoy a light snack in the cool mountain air, and, if you’d like to pick up some coffee for home or gifts to bring back from Hawaii, buying the coffee straight from the source is a great way to help local farmers.

The tour continues around the south end of the island, where you next stop at Punalu’u Beach Park for a walk down the black-sand beach. This scenic spot on the southeastern shore is known for its Hawaiian green sea turtles, which occasionally haul out and sun on the sands or bask in the shade of a palm.

Upon reaching Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, follow your guide on a short hike through a cavernous, naturally formed lava tube, which is created by the swelling and eventual cooling of an underground river of lava. When you approach the rim of Halema’uma’u Crater, you can see the steam as it rises from the Earth and the hiss of volcanic gas, and as the sunlight slowly fades into night, the crater emits an orange glow from the lava lake deep down inside. Since the temperature toward the volcano’s summit can be a bit chilly at night, enjoy a warm dinner of tasty soup that’s served with bread and then dessert.

Throughout this Kona volcano tour, every traveler has use of an iPad for reading more info about the sights, as well as scouring photos and videos or playing games in the car.

Finally, at the end of the fascinating Big Island adventure, return to your Kona or Waikoloa hotel.

Fascinating Tour By Clare
, Mar 2020
Clare did an excellent job describing tectonic activity and nature conservation efforts. At each location she provided detailed explanations of the natural formations, wildlife, and culture of Hawaii. She was an animated host and showed passion for her work. If I go to Hawaii again, then I would look to request another excursion with her.
Great day out

Wonderful experience

Our guide Claire is so friendly and helpful. She is a nice person and I enjoy the trip with her! The only sad thing would be very long stay in the vans so get ready for over 8 hours stay in car !
Great tour guide and trip
, Feb 2020
We had such a wonderful time on the tour yesterday. Claire was amazing - she should be hired by National Geographic or Smithsonian tours (I’ve been on a Smithsonian one in Africa and I liked her style better!), and we had a great group who became friends by the end of the evening. Tour highlights green sea turtles with one called Grandma, fresh coconut on the beach, lava fields and crawling through really cool lava tube, and a group and guide who rolls with the punches. Thanks for a great day
Total island adventure with Clare
, Feb 2020
This was a very thorough tour of the island and covered many different ecosystems. We were fortunate to have good weather throughout. Our guide was Clare who was extraordinarily informative and knowledgeable about the island from geology to geography and topography to biology and ecology, economics, history and local lore and legend. We learned a ton! She was so pleasant, engaging and enthusiastic as well as entertaining. You could not have asked for a better guide. Late January or February is probably the best.
Top notch

Starting with the visit to a farm, some wonderful coffee to the rest of the trip including lunch at the Southermost bakery to dinner and the visit to the lava tubes which capped off a wonderful day with Claire our guide, service was all excellent. Definitely recommend Hawaii Outdoors and small group tours
Wonderful overview of the island

Our family of four really enjoyed our tour with Claire (Clair / Clare?). She is super knowledgeable and constantly had interesting anecdotes to share, and was able to answer all of questions easily. She brought us to some amazing sites that we probably wouldn’t have discovered ourselves (lava tubules were the best). The tour was nicely structured — you get to see a diversity of things — volcanoes, coffee, a waterfall, and steam fissures, and have many opportunities for bathroom breaks and the yummy provided lunch and dinner. Claire is also really nice and a joy to be around. We loved it!
Great tour guide and fun tour

We were blessed with the best tour guide we have ever experienced! Bryce was very knowlegable and personable with all our group making us wiser and also keeping us laughing! Everywhere we went we were not rushed but got to enjoy it fully and take alot of pics, some with him too! I highly recommend this tour and hope you get a guide as wonderful as Bryce!
Couldn’t have asked for more!

We are Hawaii residence that wanted a better understanding of the Big Island and we sure did. It was all we wanted and much more. Our guide, Bryce, was incredibly knowledgeable about a broad range of topics and truly a pleasure to be with. The group was small which was nice. The vehicle was clean and comfortable. The stops were all interesting and Bryce added additional stops as time permitted. Those interested in this tour should know that it is a long day and will involve a good deal of walking, however the physical activity is relatively short with driving breaks between. Great tour!

We were a party of 9 and our tour guide, Katie, was patient, kind, and attentive. It truly is a wonderful experience and lunch and dinner were delicious!
