Why Travelers Choose This Tour

A friendly and entertaining tour that combines the two things the Big Island is best known for: volcanoes and coffee! The guide is supremely knowledgeable and the free use of an iPad during the trip to learn more about the attractions or just while away the driving time is a cool perk.
This Kona volcano tour begins at your hotel in either Kona or Waikoloa, where you’ll board a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle for the journey to Kilauea volcano.

Along the way you’ll stop at the 'coffee belt' in the cool uplands above Kona, and enjoy a cup of Kona coffee on a plantation right where it’s grown. Enjoy a light snack in the cool mountain air, and, if you’d like to pick up some coffee for home or gifts to bring back from Hawaii, buying the coffee straight from the source is a great way to help local farmers.

The tour continues around the south end of the island, where you’ll next stop at Punalu’u Beach Park for a walk down the black-sand beach. This scenic spot on the southeastern shore is known for its Hawaiian green sea turtles, which will occasionally haul out and sun on the sands or bask in the shade of a palm.

Upon reaching Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, follow your guide on a short hike through a cavernous, naturally formed lava tube, which is created by the swelling and eventual cooling of an underground river of lava. When you approach the rim of Halema’uma’u Crater, you can see the steam as it rises from the Earth and the hiss of volcanic gas, and as the sunlight slowly fades into night, the crater emits an orange glow from the lava lake deep down inside. Since the temperature toward the volcano’s summit can be a bit chilly at night, you’ll enjoy a warm dinner of tasty soup that’s served with bread and then dessert.

Throughout this Kona volcano tour, every traveler will have use of an iPad for reading more info about the sights, as well as scouring photos and videos or playing games in the car.

Finally, at the end of the fascinating Big Island adventure, you’ll return to your Kona or Waikoloa hotel.

My daughter and I loved this tour. Our tour guide Dominic was very knowledgeable and friendly. The food was good, especially the lunch at a bakery. Seeing the glow of the volcano lava at night was amazing! As was the lava tube.

For the positives: Dominick was a super smart guy and knew every inch of the Island - the roads, the different types of fruits, veggies, the little things about the Island. Amazing knowledge and very talented. Plus, an excellent driver and a really nice gentle fellow. Very patient and pleasant. If you needed a tour guide ever, you want Dominick. Gave excellent details about the Island. Would not have gotten it if we were on our own.

For the negatives: Too expensive. We should have done it by car. Was a little lazy to drive but if you have a car, you don't need Viator. Go on your own and take your time. The roads are fantastic and even during the holidays there is not a whole lot of traffic. You can manage.

We have 2 kids age 14 and 8. Everyone enjoyed this excursion. Highlight of our trip! Katie was on point with snacks, drinks and hospitality. Amazing experience! I researched lots of trips and this one exceeded our expectations.

this tour was very interesting and fun made even better by your tour guide Katie who shared lots of information and history
of the Island. Having Katie do the driving on the narrow roads was a blessing especially after dark coming home from the volcano.
Visiting the wide variety of activities kept the entire family from teenagers to grandmother entertained.

Started off well with good visits to the locations that were described. After the volcano it should have been a 1 hour and 45 minute return to our hotel. Instead the guide decided to run a Taxi service to the other side of the Island to drop off one guest resulting in a 3 hour drive back to Kona.
