This was a fabulous trip, and I was especially thankful for the opportunity to ride-along for a reduced price since I didn't want to get into the water. The rest of the family did husband, 2 older teens and had a blast. The crew of the Hang Loose, Aaron, Simon, and Bradley, really love what they do and are as equally concerned for the safety of the manta rays as they are for us. We rode to a popular spot where a few other boats were, but everyone seemed to get along just fine and helped each other out. They put a board with a blue light on it into the water to attract the plankton, which drew the manta rays in. A 15' ray showed up even before anyone got in the water. The crew made sure everyone had a good snorkel, mask, and fins as well as an airline type flotation vest inflated before we could get in. Then one of them would escort us to the board for the view. At times, up to 4 rays were swimming, eating, and frolicking at one time. My son took my camera and got some great underwater shots of the beautiful creatures. You could go in whenever you wanted, but the wetsuit top provided kept you warmer longer so you could get the experience you desired. Touching the rays wasn't allowed, but several brushed up against the people on their own. A magical experience that is recommended for anyone from about 7 years old and up. There was one really small child, about 4, on the trip and he eventually got in with the kind support of his parents and the crew. He stayed about a minute or so, then got out. The adventure really isn't for kids that young however. There were also chips/granola bars and drinks sodas and water provided, as well as nausea stuff if needed. Note - there is a bathroom on board the boat which is a plus in my book.
It was a great experience, an experience I may never get anywhere else!
Such an amazing activity! The captain and the crew were superb. I am an inexperienced snorkeler and I'm a bit afraid of the water and the captain and crew helped me out a great deal. This trip will make your visit truly one of a kind!
It's a must do on the Big Island! At first it was a little intimidating, but the crew was great and very knowledgeable. The water was warm, the manta rays were such gentle giants that when they brush up against you while feeding, it's just an un-explainable experience that you have to try yourself to understand.
Fantastic experience. Guides were great and manta rays were amazing! Be warned... Those with a tendency toward sea sickness will definitely feel it. Trip is relatively quick, but sitting anchored for an extended period then anchoring to the raft to watch the beautiful manta rays did make my husband ill.
Epic! Seeing the manta rays was an amazing experience, personified by the many screams of delight all through the harbour. Definitely a must do.
The crew made the trip really enjoyable. They were very knowledgeable about the manta rays and Hawaii in general, plus Captain Tim's stories were a highlight. Even with a minor mechanical issue with the boat which was rectified quickly, we loved every minute.
Excellent crew and unbelievable experience. I would strongly recommend to anyone visiting Kona.
Nothing else compares to this..... it is a surreal experience, like a dream! This was the best time in Hawaii!
Amazing experience with fun and lovely tour guides! This is a must see!
Captain Tim and Bradley did a great job. Tim gave a phenomenal background about manta rays. They moved the board to an area where the manta rays were at when we weren and #39;t seeing any. We stayed out longer than the other tours as well, which meant all the manta rays came to use in the end.
My husband and I had such a great time! This was truly magical and something I will never forget!!
Great experience....will definitely do again and a must do at least once. It was nice to have wet suit jacket in the evening and crew was very helpful and courteous. They were very conscious of your safety.
Fantastic trip. We all really enjoyed the crew. They really new their stuff, and they were more than happy to share it with us.we got to see many manta rays.
Even though I'm a certified scuba diver, my three friends were all newbie snorkelers. So, I decided to try to Sunset Manta Ray Snokel. All four of us enjoyed it immensely. One of the four is prone to seasickness so she took dramamene before we launched and because it was a bit rougher than normal, she took a 2nd one during. Even she enjoyed it and would recommend it, just be prepared. The snorkel part itself, you hang onto a floating platform with lights that attract the plankton that, in turn, attract the mantas. Our evening, it took a while to get the platform in position, but we finally did get to see and experience the manta rays. So, worth it!!! Definitely a highlight of our trip. The mantas gracefully glide, flip and skimmed some of us! but great show such graceful creatures. I'd do it again in a heartbeat!
This was BY FAR the highlight of our week-long trip. We did and saw some amazing things, but the experience of the manta snorkel was beyond words. We really loved it.
The water was chilly, but not uncomfortable and we saw a ray almost right away. Lots of fish swimming into the light and a few boring minutes before plenty of Rays were swimming and dancing all over. Some were small and others were HUGE! You can't touch them, but they got so close you could feel their fins graze you as they swam by. If you have a GoPro or something similar, bring it along because this is something you will want pictures of!
In addition to the great experience, the crew was fantastic. My 6-month pregnant wife got fairly sick and so did I, but in a much more manly and unembarrassung way!, and the crew was very helpful. They were entertaining, encouraging, and really took care of us while we weren't feeling the best. Thanks guys! You made a wonderful experience even better despite us getting sea sick!

Great experience for the best price. Saw many Manta Rays. Crew was excellent
This was great. Despite the weather being a bit rough, everyone had a great view of these magnificent animals, which came within a couple of inches of your body. Our boat had the brightest lights on the viewing board which attracted all the Rays, so that all of the people from the other five or so boats drifted over to us. The captain and crew were amusing fellows who clearly loved what they were doing and cared about their passengers having a good time. Highly recommended.

This was an awesome experience. We saw several manta rays on our trip, all lit up with phytoplankton. The boat ride was a little rough and a few folks got sea sick, so you may want to watch what you eat prior...maybe a few ginger chews before/during the trip!! The ride over was beautiful during the sunset, and the ride back was equally beautiful below the stars!
Awesome trip, great crew. Had about 6 rays come up to the light platform. If the rays aren't in your spot they'll move you around to find them. Not hard to do just hold on to the platform and look down
Actually THE BEST thing of 2 weeks vacation on the islands!! DO NOT MISS THAT!!!
It was AWESOME!!! I would do it again and recommend it to others
Great experience! The mantas are so close they brush against you. It is so amazing to watch these beautiful, graceful creatures up close and personal!!
