This 2-hour evening tour allows you to sip cocktails aboard a catamaran while searching for whales during the Hawaiian sunset. Learn about humpback whale biology and behavior from your naturalist guide while you munch on cold and hot appetizers.
Find your way to the Ocean Sports Whale Center, located in Kawaihae, where you'll check in for your evening cruise (departure time varies seasonally). After a shore shuttle ride, step aboard the catamaran docked in the harbor.
Find a seat on the spacious deck, or inside the cabin, then settle in and sip a tropical cocktail or a nonalcoholic drink. Amenities on the catamaran include restrooms, tables with seating for 24 passengers, large windows, and a netted trampoline for lounging on the front of the boat. Listen to a safety orientation as the boat gets underway and meet your captain and crew.
Leaving the harbor, keep a lookout for splashes and spouts from humpback whales. Your naturalist guide will be on hand to talk about the whales' biology and behavior. If the weather permits, the captain will stop the vessel and deploy the underwater hydrophone so that you can hear the whale songs. The boat will not approach a Humpback closer than 100 yards or maneuver the vessel in any way that might alter the behavior of the whales.
An assortment of hot and cold pupu (appetizers) are available throughout the cruise, including spicy chicken wings with a ranch dipping sauce, BBQ style meatballs, classic slider buns, chips & salsa, and a platter of crisp veggies. The bar is open for the duration of the charter featuring tropical cocktails, a short bar, local beers on tap, red and white wines, and soft drinks.
After the sun sets, your captain will return to your departure point, where you will disembark.
