What You Can Expect

Bran Castle and Rasnov Fortress Tour from Brasov with Optional Peles Castle Visit

Explore the lanes of Rasnov Fortress on a trip from Brasov

Explore two of Transylvania’s most impressive citadels and discover why the region is steeped in mysterious lore. Your professional guide will pick you up in central Braşov in a car or minivan for the 30-minute ride south to Râșnov, situated among the stunning Bucegi Mountains.
Learn about the storied history of Râșnov Fortress, a walled stone compound designed to ward off attacks by the fierce Tartars and used as a refuge for local villagers during medieval warfare. Explore the time-worn courtyards, ramparts and well of the 13th-century fortress built by the Teutons. Opt to have lunch in Râșnov if you like (own expense).
A short drive brings you to Bran Castle, nicknamed ‘Dracula’s Castle’ for its ties to Bram Stoker’s 1897 Gothic tale and its bloodthirsty villain. The high stone walls and red turrets of this hilltop citadel come into view as you approach the secluded castle, set among the dramatic backdrop of the Carpathians.
Enter if you dare, after paying the site fee (own expense), and wander through the castle’s many well-preserved rooms and chambers with your guide. Gothic furnishings and details help set the scene for ghastly legends of all that happened here, including the imprisonment of Vlad the Impaler. This 15th-century prince was notorious for his bloodthirsty campaigns against invading Turks and is said to have inspired Stoker’s malevolent Count Dracula.
If you’ve had your fill of vampiric lore, your guide will drive you back to Braşov at this point. If you’re thirsty for more, extend your tour by 3 to 4 hours and continue on to the nearby Peleș Castle (own expense to be paid the day of the tour).
The expansive, Bavarian-style Peleș Castle was built among a lush forest to house Romania’s royalty in the 19th century and is among the most beautiful in Europe. A guide will lead you through many of its immaculate, ornate rooms, still adorned with luxuriant furnishings and décor. You’ll also have the chance to tour the neighbouring Pelișor Castle, a smaller royal residence decked out in art nouveau finery.

We toured with Charlie from Active Travel Day Tours, who was knowledgeable and engaging in every way possible. We were also fortunate to get his services for our Brasov tours on consecutive days. For this tour we chose the optional Peles Castle Visit, which we highly recommend. Charlie shared his vast knowledge on Bran Castle/Rasnov Fortress which are very different types of fortifications, and brought us through the majestic Peles Castle. We even had some fun looking for Dracula in Bran Castle haha. Do note that the entrance fees are not included for this tour. And although travelling in winter albeit the end of winter meant that the open fortresses were frigid at times especially with the wind minus Peles Castle which has indoor heating, Charlie did his best to keep us entertained! He even brought us to special locations for nicer photo opportunities. Sign up for this tour if you can allocate a day-trip from Brasov!

We had a great trip! Dan is very knowledgeable about the history of Brasov, having lived their for his entire life. We got to do an extra stop at an old Lutheran Church--freezing cold, but a beautiful place. The palace and fortress were both gorgeous, and Dan made the car rides in between fly by. Overall, a very nice experience that would have been impossible without Dan.

Outstanding tour guide who went the extra mile and guided around all the locations, not just driving me between them.

We loved this tour.
Our driver and guide Karl, went the extra mile to provide us with the day we wanted.
Bran castle is a must in Romania. Real and imaginary coalesce to provide a day to cherish and remember.
We had hoped to include Peles castle in the trip, but it is closed to the public in November. But Karl took us there and gave us a wonderfully enlightening account of this castle and it's sister castle Pelisor which was open to visitors.
We had hoped to watch some bears in the wild in Romania but had not taken into account that they would be in hibernation in November and this tour is not available in November. Karl was able to point us to the refuge for bears and took us there as an addition to the trip which he offered free of charge.
We ate in a wonderful restaurant recommended by our guide.
The day was one to remember, but the crowning glory was the kindness of Karl and his knowledge of the history, geography, natural history and culture of the area we toured and his choice of the best photo opportunities of each location.

We really enjoyed the tour with our guide Charly! 3 castles, very different one from each other. Our favorite one was Bran but Peles and Rasnov are also beautiful and they worth a visit.

We had a great tour with Charley last week. He is very knowledgeable and proud of Brasov and the surrounding area. He took us to all of the best places for photographs, knew everything there was to know about Bran Castle, Rasnov fortress and the region in general. Very kind person that made us feel like instant friends. We had a wonderful leisurely lunch with Charley and another couple that was on the tour. The whole excursion went at a perfect pace. We would finitely recommend this tour to anyone. Outstanding!!!

Our guide, Dan, was very knowledgeable and accommodating. You could tell he wanted us to see and understand everything. We saw Bran, Peles, and Radnov Castles in one full day and it was worth every penny.

Our tour Guide was excellent. not only was he able to tell us detailed history of all the locations we visited but he also took us to some lesser known photo-esque viewpoints. at no point did we feel rushed or uncomfortable.
I highly recommend opting for the Peles Castle add on, while it is more of a palace than an actual castle, the artwork, history and overall tour is incredible.
