Meet your guide at the Brooklyn Army Terminal, located on the Brooklyn waterfront accessible by subway from Manhattan. Start your 2-hour walking tour with a visit inside the breathtaking atrium of Building B, where freight trains once rumbled through to be loaded from the cantilevered balconies.

The Army Terminal, composed of two massive warehouses that were the largest concrete buildings in the world when they were constructed in 1919, was designed by Cass Gilbert, architect of structures like the Woolworth Building and the New York Customs House. The facility was built to supply American forces in Europe during WWI and served the American military until the Vietnam War.

As you tour the enormous complex, which, in addition to the warehouses, includes a bustling marine port and railroad hub, listen to the stories of soldiers, longshoremen and merchant mariners who traveled through and worked here. See where Elvis Presley embarked on his army service in Europe in 1958, pass by the home of the NYPD Harbor Unit, and take in views of New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty, Lower Manhattan and New Jersey's working waterfront.

Visit the 600,000-square-foot (182,880-square-meter) unrestored space of Building A, and find out how millions of tons of war supplies and personnel were shipped through this transportation center. Your guide sheds light on what made the Port of New York the envy of the world in the mid-20th century, why it later went into decline and how Brooklyn’s working waterfront is being revitalized today by its conversion into an industrial park that's home to more than 100 companies in industries ranging from biotech researchers to chocolatiers.
