What You Can Expect

Small-Group Somme Battlefields, Fromelles and Flanders Fields Tour with Last Post Ceremony in Ypres from Brussels

See the battlefields of Flanders

Leave your Brussels hotel in the morning, and relax on the journey to the Flanders region of Belgium as your guide gives an introduction to the WWI battles and the Australian involvement in them.

Your first stop is the Australian memorial spot of Villers-Bretonneux where the ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) commemorations are held each year. See the monument at Le Hamel and learn about a battle in 1918 that spelled the ‘beginning of the end’ for the German troops.

Pause at the foot of Lochnagar Crater, the biggest on the Western Front, en route to Pozières. A monument was placed here to mark the spot where tanks were first used. Then, pay your respects to the 72,000 soldiers with no known graves at Thiepval, a monument, visitor center and French-British Memorial.

After a break for lunch, head in the direction of Fromelles, where the Australian Memorial Park, VC Corner Cemetery and Memorial and Pheasant Wood Military Cemetery await. As you visit each site, learn about the Australian forces and their role in the conflict from your knowledgeable guide.

In Flanders, stop to see Plugsteert’s Winston Churchill Plaque and a Memorial to the Missing, as well as Messines Ridge, Caterpillar Ridge and Hill 60 where British, Australian and New Zealand troops endured days of intense fighting.

Your battlefield visits end with a trip to Tyne Cot Cemetery, the world’s biggest Commonwealth military graveyard with an estimated 13,000 graves. Continue to Ypres, and make the most of some free time for an evening meal before the Last Post Ceremony, which takes place at Menin Gate. Your experience then ends with a hotel drop-off in Brussels.
