What You Can Expect

Tokaj Wine Country Day Trip from Budapest

Learn about winemaking in Tokaj wine country

Tokaj’s volcanic hills and warm, wet climate are the key to this wine region’s production, creating a mold called ‘noble rot’. The mold is the secret to enhancing the taste of the world-famous dessert wine, the topaz-colored Tokaji aszú.

Your tour will begin with pickup at your hotel in Budapest. Then your guide will drive you to the UNESCO-listed region of Tokaj, classified as the world’s oldest wine region. You’ll learn about the winemaking that originated here over a millennia ago and the area’s oldest cellars, many of which were dug into the volcanic rock and treated in the mold.

The winemaker and host will greet you upon arrival at the first winery, and samples of five to eight wines will follow. You’ll learn about the local furmint and hárslevelu grapes favored here while noting the aroma and flavors as you sip.

You’ll also have the opportunity to try Tokaj’s dry white wines as you visit the two additional wineries on the itinerary. Each stop will include a tasting of five to eight local wines, as well as a tour of the vineyard and cellar to illustrate the winemaking process.

At mid-day you’ll stop to enjoy a flavorful 3-course lunch, including traditional Hungarian dishes such as broths, stews and roasts, along with classic pastries like strudel.

At the third and final winery, you’ll pair your tastings with local cured meat and cheese before hopping back into the car, where your guide will return you to your Budapest accommodations.

The entire experience was awesome. We did this on our last full day in Hungary as part of our anniversary and were not disappointed. I was not a white wine fan until I had this tour and now my palette has expanded. Our ride was on time and our tour guide Gyorgy was awesome. While not typical for the tours, we had a gentleman named Robert join us who was observing as he is expected to be doing similar tours with the company he was an absolute delight to have with us. Every vineyard we went to was unique and worth visiting. The vineyard guides were knowledgeable, kind, and genuinely enthusiastic about their wines. Lunch for us included homemade soup, roast duck, a macaroni dish, and dessert. Not in that order though there was no lack of food and we were plenty full. While eating lunch we were presented with various wines to taste. I would not change anything about the experience, the conversations were genuine, the knowledge was vast among our guides especially from our main host Gyorgy and Robert. It is worth every penny. The views were breath taking, and the wines were memorable.
