What You Can Expect

Gaucho Day Trip from Buenos Aires: Santa Susana Ranch

Argentine BBQ

Traditional customs of Argentine ranch life are still celebrated at the handful of estancias near Buenos Aires. Your full-day country retreat begins with morning pickup at your city hotel in an air-conditioned van and a lovely drive across the pampas (plains).

After arriving at Estancia Santa Susana, you’ll be welcomed at the ranch house with warm empanadas and wine. Take a tour of Santa Susana’s grounds, chapel and museum while hearing stories about this historic working ranch.

Meet the friendly gauchos — talented wranglers and horsemen similar to cowboys of the American West. Climb astride a horse from the ranch stables or hop aboard a horse-drawn carriage for a ride through the surrounding farmland.

When you return to the ranch, settle in at a rustic banquet table for a savory parrillada (Argentine barbecue) featuring many different cuts of expertly grilled meats and sausages served with salads and regional wine. Top off your feast with a sweet pastelito (pastry) and a cup of mate — a favorite Argentine drink made from steeped yerba mate leaves.

As you dine, enjoy a performance of traditional folk music and dancing, plus a boleadoras show where gauchos perform impressive feats of weapon throwing. Head outside to the pasture where the gauchos will continue displaying their skills through daring horseman stunt tricks, animal herding, and the ring race known as la sortija.

After your full day of ranch festivities, relax on the return drive to Buenos Aires to be dropped-off at a central location.

We very much enjoyed this trip and our guide. The food was very good and the experience at the ranch was great. It wasn't that busy the day we went, so everything was easy and quick to do. Make sure you bring cash for tips, they'll ask for it.

Recommended as an easy day tour. Guide was great although at end driver and guide said demonstrations in town and difficult to get us close to hotel. We walked which was not a problem but saw no demonstrations, but food good gaucho horse riding phenomenal and show great fun participating.

One of the best meals I had while in Buenos Aires. Wine was good and they just kept it coming. Entertainment during lunch was fantastic. I would highly recommend this tour.

We loved our Visit to Santa Susana Ranch. It is a great Family outing. We were picked up at 9am and back at the hotel by 5:30. My kids enjoyed the horse back riding, museum, dancing, music and culture. The food, wine and beer were plentiful and very good. The people at Santa Susana were wonderful. They really enjoyed their work. The music and dancing were great to watch. The Tango Senorita was very beautiful. The Gauchos were a crack up. It is a beautiful setting. A wonderful afternoon. Highly recommended.

I absolutely loved my trip out to Santa Susana Ranch! It is well worth the time and money. You are greeted with wine and an empanada and a beautiful view. You can tour the museum/original house with all the beautiful furnishings. A wonderful show with a sit-down lunch is phenomenal! I loved the fact that I had the opportunity to ride a horse for the first time ever in my life! The gauchos put on a great show of skill on their horses after the lunch. Everyone is very friendly. I truly had enjoyable time!

There were several Gaucho day trips listed on Viator to choose from, and based on the reviews, we choose this one. Good choice! We had a fantastic day. The experience begins with a bus-ride to the ranch -- it was about an hour from the last passenger pick-up. There were 19 passengers on a small bus that fit 19 people, so it was a tight-fit for all of us -- but the bus was air-conditioned, and the ride was a nice way to view more of the city and surrounding area. Our guide, Macarena, was delightful, and her English was terrific. She gave us a lot of background and information.

Once at the ranch, we were met by a Gaucho, as well as plates of empanadas and glasses of wine red or white or juice. We got a tour of the grounds, and then we were set free to explore. We began by going to the two small museums -- one was a very small chapel and the other a small home. Both were simple and didn't take long to walk through, but gave a good indication of what life was life on the pampas back in the day. We also took a quick stroll through the small gift shop.

Next, we decided to ride horses. The gauchos helped us all onto the horses, and we walked around the ranch. The ranch is located an hour out of BA, but still in a populated area, so part of the perimeter is bordered by roads and cars -- but it is far enough in the country that it is relaxing and beautiful. On the horse, you can see how well-groomed the ranch is, and we loved riding around. After the horses, we sat and enjoyed being in the country -- by then, the ranch was full of tourists, though it is large enough to accommodate many tourists at the same time.

Lunch was next, and the food was served by the Gauchos, one meat at a time. We had two steaks, chicken, and two sausages -- all excellent. The food is cooked on an open grill see my photos, and it was some of the best meat we had in our visit to Argentina. Also included were salads, desert, and drinks each table had bottles of Malbec, and you could order beer, water, soft drinks, etc..

After dinner came the show. Great musicians, very good singing, and some tango dancing were all good -- and then an amazing male dancer finished the show with a high-energy performance.

Next came a second show -- this time with the Gauchos and the horses. They did some horse maneuvers and tricks, and everyone in the crowd seemed to have a great time including us.

Entertained, tired, and our bellies full, we went back on the bus for the relaxing ride back to the city. We originally booked this trip thinking it would be fun for our kid, and he did love it -- but I think we loved it almost as much as he did. They know what they are doing, and this is a great tour to experience.

Fantastic experience. The estate is pretty and the quick horse ride around it gives you a sense of the place. The lunch provided is fantastic. They don't go light on the meat so you leave full. The dance and music performance after lunch was entertaining and they did a good job getting the entire crowd involved.
