What You Can Expect

Atherton Tablelands Tour from Cairns

Atherton Tablelands Tour from Cairns

Your day trip to the Atherton Tablelands, part of the World Heritage–listed Wet Tropics of Queensland, starts with hotel pickups in Cairns by coach for the drive to the Tablelands, located about 50 miles (80 km) southwest of Cairns. After about an hour of driving, make a stop at the Cathedral Fig Tree, a large 500-year-old strangler fig tree with long aerial roots.

Drive onward into a pristine rainforest, where you’ll stop at Lake Eacham. Go for a swim in the volcanic lake, created more than 12,000 years ago, and watch for turtles in the clear water while your guide prepares a hearty morning tea.

After your snack break, head to Mt Hypipamee National Park to check out Dinner Falls, where you can go swimming again, and then take a 0.5-mile (800-meter) walk to a viewpoint to admire the crater. You’ll spot a jewel-toned lake as you look down at the crater rim, a dizzying 450 feet (138 meters) below you.

When you're ready for lunch, you can eat your own, if you brought one with you, or wait until you reach the town of Millaa Millaa to buy lunch. Then head to Millaa Millaa Falls to take a swim in its natural tropical pool. Your last destination, and the highlight of your tour, is Josephine Falls, which you’ll reach by taking a short walk with your guide. If you’re feeling adventurous, go down the ‘waterslide’ that dumps you into a deep pool, or just relax and enjoy the scenery. You’ll also refuel here with afternoon snacks provided by your guide.

Your day trip ends with the drive back to Cairns for hotel drop-off.

Please note: This is a sample itinerary; yours may vary based on the road and/or weather conditions on the day of your tour.

We had so much fun on our Barefoot Tour to see the waterfalls. Our tour guide, Rohan, was hilarious and friendly and we had an awesome group of people that we toured with. We all got to know each other on our day-long tour, exploring the falls, swimming in stunning pools, and sliding down a natural rock slide! All-in-all, it was an amazingly fun experience and a great way to spend a day exploring and learning about the region just outside of Cairns. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a fun but relaxed day tour.

A super fun trip with Captain Matty. Excellent value for money.so many laughs and some fabulous places Captain Matty took us to. Thoroughly recommend. Over the years have done many organised tours for FNQ but this was the best.

The tour was cool. Our guide was funny. He took us to multiple falls in a van ... to swim, and took nice photos through the whole journey. Lunch self-paid in a small town was nice but morning tea and afternoon tea was not as good. The guide boiled water for us to make coffee and tea but the water itself was brown like carrying mud in it. It's recommended to bring your own water. The guide also brought TimTam and taught us the TimTam slam. It was fun.

The view in Atherton Tablelands is great, however driving there is not easy for non-locals. It takes more than 1 hour just driving the zigzag mountain roads. So taking a tour would be a good choice for most people. This tour is more like youth tours recommended to people under 25 or with a heart under 25. I'm sure there're many other nice tours to grown-ups.

Double consider if you're not a good swimmer, 'cause the fun is highly involved with deep water activities.

Nice tour overall! I will recommend it to friends definitely.

Definitely recommended if you're up for a short walks to waterfalls and are wiling to jump in the water! Many opportunities to go for a swim and our tour guide, Brett, was awesome about keeping everyone engaged and capturing special events during the tour!
