This is an unmissable trip for anybody visiting Cairns. We opted to take the scenic railway up and return via the Skyrail, but the reverse option is also available. As ever, the trip was impeccably managed by Viator, with our coach picking us up from our hotel right on time and taking us to the drop off point Freshwater Station in plenty of time. The Gold Class ticket on the charming train represented excellent vfm, as we were waitress served cold and hot drinks including alcoholic if requested as well as savoury and sweet snacks on the ascent to Kuranda. However, the real star of the show was the magnificent views we got along the way: absolutely breathtaking! We reached Kuranda in about 60 minutes and were genuinely sad to get off the train. Kuranda Village itself is a tourist trap, with souvenir shops, bars and restaurants as well as a number of attractions, including bird zoos and a koala zoo where people could have their photos taken with a rather tired and spaced out looking koala. Not for everybody, Im sure. In some places it was nothing shy of tacky and, overall, Kuranda Village was ok: by no means great and certainly not as good as the journeys to and from it. Our journey down was via the Skyrail, a long cable car ride above the canopy of the rainforest. A very different aspect from the scenic railway, but equally as enthralling and spectacular. There are opportunities to disembark along the way and to walk short stretches and circuits of the rainforest. At the bottom terminal, there is a gift shop and a small cafe. It would have finished my day off perfectly if I could have bought a cold beer at the terminal but unfortunately that was not an option. We were efficiently shepherded back to our return coach for the short journey back to Cairns. A thoroughly enjoyable and memorable day out.

We had booked this trip on the day I was celebrating a 'big' birthday and had bought the Gold Class having read previous reviews and recommendations. This trip was excellent, it is expensive but so well organised and informative we think it was worth it it was definitely worth upgrading to the 'gold class'.
On collection from our hotel we were handed a personal itinerary outlining the order in which we would undertake the activities and at what time. We commenced our day on the Scenic Railway and having upgraded received a free mocktail on arrival at the railway station. We then sat within the 'gold class' section of the train and were served sparkling wine, wine/beer, tea/coffee, soft drinks along with Morning Tea warm savoury muffin, warm spinach and ricotta cheese pastry, Anzac biscuit and mango sorbet - it was all lovely. The train journey took us through the rain forest with a commentary provided about the building of the railway the journey in total was about 1.5 hours which included slowing down for photo opportunities of the view and one short stop to view the waterfalls which were rather splendid having had a full 24 hours rain the previous day!. On arrival in Kuranda we were given a small momento of our trip.
We then had just over 2 hours to look around Kuranda before catching the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway back down to the collection point. There are two stop off points along the route, the first providing walkways through the forest to viewing platforms overlooking the waterfalls the second provided an opportunity to walk through the rain forest. A Ranger provided tours for those that wanted them this was well worth the 5-minute wait we had until the tour commenced as we learnt so much about the forest, how the trees, plants and animals all work together and depend on one another - we would never have understood what we were walking through had we not done this. Gliding over the rain forest canopy was incredible - the colours, the views - exceeded what we had anticipated.
Although a long day, this is well worth it, a great day.
Brilliant. A lovely cabin on the train with snacks and refreshments being served. The personal touch made it a worthwhile experience. Views from the train amazing. The journey back on the Skyrail was fantastic with great views of the rainforest. Highly recommended.

Fantastic day from start to finish! Picked up on time from our hotel and a short journey10 minutes to the skyrail station.Because there was only 2 of us we got fast tracked to the front of the queue to fill a cable car. The journey took about 40 minutes could take longer if you spend more time at the lookout stops on the way . The views over the rainforests were spectacular.Once we arrived at Kuranda we had plenty of time to look round the shops, have some lunch, listen to a local boy playing a didgeridoo and cuddle a koala which was great. The return journey was on the Kuranda scenic railway. We had gold class tickets which entitled us to travel in a lovely spacious carriage with very comfortable seats. It also included complementary wine, a selection of cheeses, a delicious mango sorbet and a souvenir pack containing a pen, postcard and pin badge. The train stopped several times at appropriate places for excellent photo opportunities. If you only have a short time in Cairns make this trip a priority.
An amazing experience that can be highly recommended to everyone. Even if the weather was a bit humid with rain and everything, the Skip the Line: Kuranda Scenic Railway Gold Class was worth the money. Perfect trip for the whole family.
This was GREAT and we are really glad we did the Gold Class, it made the trip really fly bye. The scenery was great and the time in Kuranda was sufficient.
Highly recommend this tour. A must do if you are going to Cairns. My sister and I decided to start the day by going to Kuranda by Skyrail and returning to Cairns by Gold Class train. Amazing scenery, rainforest guided tour, wonderful shopping and lunch at the Kuranda markets. Pay the extra to travel Gold Class on the train as the service is first class. Worth every cent.
We love this tour! Long day but it was definitely high class, very informative, and there were PLENTY of options for taking pictures without feeling rushed.
One of the best tours I went on in Australia. Fabulous scenery going up in the cable car. The Gold Class in the Kuranda Scenic Railway was amazing and well worth the few extra dollars. Plenty of nice eateries at the top and had my photo taken with a koala which was a real treat. Absolutely loved this trip.
I highly recommend this tour. No line and it is first class seating along with drinks and food on the trip up - you will experience the joys of railroad travel from another time period while seeing amazing scenery along the way. May be the only place left in Australia where you can actually hold a koala! The small town is charming as well!
This is a superb tour, we were picked up on time and driven to the sky rail with really good advice on the day. The sky rail is one of the longest in the world with several stops along the way alowing short walks around thevrain forest, guided if you want. Kurunda town is great for souvieneirs, eating or just taking a gentle stroll around the town. The ride back on the train is excellent with real interesting commentary on how the rail road was constructed again stopping to allow pictures to be taken, once your underway a steward serves drinks and snacks. The gold pass is a much ,ore comfortable ride than Jon gold and I highly recommend it. Both myself and my wife had a great day and highly recommend the tour.
This was a fabulous day tour. The Gold Class train journey was really worthwhile. The food and drink service was excellent. We walked down by the river in Kuranda which was really quiet, did some shopping in the market stalls then toured the Butterfly museum. The Skyrail journey down over the forest was amazing. We stopped for the guided tour of the forest on the way down. The whole experience from pick up to drop off at our hotel was wonderful. The bus drivers gave us such a lot of information about Cairns and the towns we went through. I will treasure the memories.
Wow,what a great day! We were so glad that we chose Gold Class on the Kuranda Scenic Railway. A great way to sit back and relax in comfort and take in the magnificent scenery on the trip up to Kuranda. The return trip on Skyrail Rainforest Cableway was another way to observe the pristine Rainforest . The views of the coastline around Cairns were also spectacular. We would strongly recommend this trip to anyone wanting to see this beautiful part of FNQ.
fantastic trip!! Everything was right on schedule. The rainforest is awesome!
This tour was fabulous.
It was an amazing value for the price.
Train in GOLD class highly recommended
What a great tour - Highly recommend - Seeing Kuranda and experiencing both the railway and skyrail were one of the real highlights to visiting this area. Our family especially enjoyed the gold class level of service on the Railway. It was well worth the extra money. We all enjoyed traveling up the mountain by train sipping on alcoholic drinks produced by local wineries and eating morning breakfast type snacks. It was almost like all you could drink and eat. They really treated us well. This is a must see/experience tour!
Great tour!!!! definitely take the Gold Class rail service, the seating in very comfortable chairs while the other class of service is a wooden bench seating. The service on the Gold Class was superb and the food was great. Kuranda was nice for walking around for some shopping and lunch. The cable back was relaxing with beautiful sights.
This is another don't miss tour. Suggest you go first class. We had a ball and saw and learned much.
A really nice day. We rode the cable car up and the train down to enjoy appetizers and wine in the afternoon. Cable car interesting with stops at the falls and rain forest to Kuranda. Lots of interesting shops to investigate. You can shop till you drop.
