This was an absolutely fantastic experience for me and my step daughter. Patricia was our guide and she was great. She took us to meet Felipe in Market 23 where we bought our food. Felipe doesn't speak a lot of English, but between my step daughter and I understanding a little and Patricia translating for us, we didn't have any problems. We then went back to his restaurant to prepare our lunch which consisted of guacamole, pork in a mole-type sauce forgive us Felipe, but we can't remember the proper name! and a creme brulee infused with rosemary for dessert. We worked alongside Felipe as he showed us how to prepare everything and then we sat down to eat it. I don't know if this was the same restaurant as the reviewer in November of 2015, but Felipe stressed that all fruits and vegetables have to be disinfected and his restaurant was very clean in my personal opinion. Definitely worth the money and one of the highlights of my trip to Cancun!
highly, highly, highly recommend this tour! At first we didnt know what we were getting ourselves into, but this experience ended up being the highlight of our trip. Learning to cook with Santiago in the quaint setting was a romantic and adventurous experience for my husband and I. The food was incredible and the experience was intimate and personal. It was so refreshing to get away from the hotel zone and truly experience the real flavor of Cancun. Go on this experience--you wont regret it!
This tour is not for everyone. I am a foodie and really enjoyed our time in the market and also preparing some unusual foods. Had never had an octopus taco before! It was delicious, and the chef was fun and interesting. That said, I must warn if you are accustomed to and desiring of health department standards, this tour may be too rustic for you. I certainly have relatives who would not enjoy. But if you want an authentic and adventurous foodie experience, then go for it!
In the What to Expect - it says you will prepare a meal with Filepe in his restaurant Lu'um. We didn't see Filipe or his restaurant. We didn't have any of the food in the pictures. We were offered octopus tacos. If we knew that, we NEVER would have gone on this excursion. Instead, we were served beans. REALLY? That was the protein we were offered?
Visiting the market was extremely interesting. We didn't help choose ANY of the ingredients. In fact, only ONE of the ingredients that was purchased was used in our meal. We're not sure what happened. The meal was extremely disappointing.
After our meal, we were brought to Market 28 and told that a tour guide would meet us there. We had to find someone to translate to the driver who spoke NO English. After assuring that the driver would wait for us, we walked around the market a bit.
Overall, this excursion was WAY over priced for the experience and meal that we received. These people need to improve greatly!
