Begin with pickup from your accommodations in the Riviera Maya or Cancun (pickup times vary with location), and travel to a dock in Cancun. Board a boat that accommodates up to 10 passengers, and enjoy views of the coast as you travel to the whale shark feeding grounds. Watch for activity in two main areas: Mar Azul by Isla Mujeres, and Aguas Verdes, off Isla Holbox.
When you sight the whale sharks, slip into the water to swim alongside them, watching them feed on microscopic plankton—the whale shark is a filter feeder, and swims along the surface of the water with its massive jaws open to catch tiny plants and animals. This is also a good place to spot dolphins, manta rays, and Cancun’s three most common sea turtles: green turtles, hawksbill turtles, and loggerhead turtles.
After snorkeling with the whale sharks, moor off an Isla Mujeres beach for an onboard lunch of ceviche and turkey sandwiches (vegetarian options are available). Dive into the clear, coastal waters for a final swim before the 30-minute boat ride to Cancun, arriving at the dock at roughly 2pm. This tour concludes with return transfer to your accommodations.
