Get picked up from your Cape Town accommodations in the morning, continuing by private vehicle along the scenic coastal route known as the “Whale Route” due to some of the world’s best on-shore whale watching.
You’ll pass through scenic areas like Pringle Bay, Betty’s Bay and Gordon’s Bay while traveling to Hermanus, keeping your eyes peeled for the Southern right whales that hang out just off shore. During the period from June to November the whales are known to come even closer to shore as they begin their annual breeding and calving season.
When you reach Hermanus, one of the best-known whaling centers in South Africa, you’ll have time grab lunch (own expense) and admire these gentle leviathans from a comfortable viewing point. Continue after lunch to your first wine tasting, heading to Hamilton Russell, a winery situated in the Hemel en Aarde Valley. Sip on some of the winemaker’s Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines, known to many as some of the best in the country.
Head to your next tasting at Southern Right, a winery inspired by the whales that swim just offshore. Sip on some of Southern Right’s well-regarded Pinotage as you celebrate the fact that the winery donates a portion of its proceeds to protecting the brand’s namesake creature. Finish your trip at Whalehaven boutique winery, where you’ll sample a collection of French-inspired Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. After your last wine stop, head back to Cape Town, arriving around 6pm.
Please note that you must be at least 18 years of age to participate in wine tastings.
