My son turned 6 years old and wanted to ride a submarine. So we flew down to Los Angeles, took a ferry to Catalina island just to go onto this yellow submarine. We waited in line but my son needed to go to the bathroom. We asked the guy if there was one on the sub and they said no. Then they pointed us to the nearest one. I said we'd be right back and we ran to the bathroom. We ran back and as soon as we arrived, the sub was shoving off. This guy couldn't wait another 30 seconds to let us on. It was Thanksgiving by the way.
    Amazing quick, easy excursion

Amazing quick, easy excursion. Would recommend, especially for kids, they would have a blast, but even adults, such as us, enjoyed this experience seeing fish up close.
I enjoyed watching the children enjoy the experience.
    Jerry_V, Oct 2022
The most memorable part of the voyage was all of the fish, and the birds, that were seen through the portholes. Reviews of this excursion mentioned that the trip was not 45 minutes as advertised. I agree. Don’t be cheapskates. Deliver what you promise.
You have to pay extra to buy food to see fish

You walk down into what looks like a submarine with lots of bench seats next to round windows. The windows unfortunately were not very clean. They don't tell you when you book the tour that you in order for fish to come up to the boat, you have to pay to "shoot out" food from next to your window. The cost ranges from $6-$20 that they take in cash once you're moving. It takes about 15 minutes to get to the fish, you have 15 minutes there, and 15 minutes back. The only person on board who paid for the food had a lot of fish. They were all gray medium-sized fish. The idea of the is semi-sub is cool, and kids will probably like it, but don't expect much and bring cash if you want to see fish.
    Fun trip for kids!

The trip was fun and we got to see a lot of fish. My daughter said it was her favorite thing that we did on Catalina. Our only complaint was that we weren't told ahead of time that fish food would be available on the sub and was cash only. My kids were super disappointed that we couldn't buy any fish food because we didn't have any cash.

We were told it’s a 45 mins trip but it wasn’t even 30 mins. This is ridiculous. You are charging full money for not even a 30 min trip

Watching the fish from under water was a unique experience, but the sound of the "food trigger" was loud
    Whitney_C, Sep 2022
The food torpedos were fun, the windows were clean and the tour wasn’t rushed at all. It was very clean and a great way to see underwater with the kids.

Nice tour if you have never been snorkeling or diving. It was actually 15 minutes out and 15 minutes back. 30 minute tour, not 45
    Sam_C, Sep 2022
Ok not exciting trip. Feels like a racket to get people to buy fish food, don’t really go anywhere but within 5 miles off shore
    Submarine Bombardment
    Charmain_C, Sep 2022
Being on submarine. I expected to see different kinds of fish but only two kinds showed up, one kind dominated view getting food coming from sub. Maybe they should stop feeding fish so they don't surround sub windows.

Very satisfied with the service Will recommend to friends And family. Will use this service again. Enjoyed our trip.
    Rude tour guide
    Steven_V, Sep 2022
Gentleman who was guiding the experience is not friendly. Had a very negative and condescending tone towards riders and making rude comments. It’s the guy with long curly hair. People are new to this and he had little patience with everyone. I would not recommend this to anyone unless he changes his attitude or no longer works there.

    Great experience

Great experience and lots of fun. Boarding was very quick. Tour guide was a little hard to understand, but answered any questions that were brought up.

It is a decent experience seeing the different fish swimming and the kelp, however would not do again. The host barely spoke more than 5 lines during the ride and honestly looked like he was ready to go home. He was watching some YouTube videos on his phone in the back when he was not speaking on the mic. Doesn’t seem professional at all. I went with my family on Sunday Aug 28th for the 3:15pm ride. When you’re paying over $40 per person, you’d think you’ll be getting some better service than that. You also will be paying another $6, $12, or $20 cash on board for fish food. Overall, i would rather spend my time or money in another activity at Avalon, you won’t be wowed here.

    Feed the fish
    Leanne_P, Aug 2022
I enjoyed seeing fish under the surface of the ocean. But was surprised that I was expected to buy fish food in order to bring the fish to my porthole.
    Rebeka_K, Aug 2022
Only thing sucked was you have to pay for fish food to see fish. Also I do wish it was longer than 45 min! But other than that it was great!
    Family Fun

This is a nice tour for all ages. We took adults & seniors and everyone enjoyed it. A heads up, there are steps involved, so make sure your group members are able to independently get up & down the steps.
    Good for kids 3.75 stars
