What To Expect

This horse-drawn carriage ride and tour, a journey that travels back in time to the colonial beginnings of Charleston, meets at 14 Anson Street, home of the Old South Carriage Company. Charleston, the oldest and second-largest city in South Carolina, is defined by its cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages and pre-Civil-War-era houses.

As the tour progresses, pass by the old churches, antebellum mansions and lush gardens of Charleston — more than 2.5 miles and 30 blocks of residential real estate. Stop outside historic homes, like the Gov. William Aiken House, the former home of South Carolina Governor William Aiken, Jr. This house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

Part of the charm of the tour are the horses that pull the carriage. These are the same kinds of draft horses that worked on American farms in the early 1800s, making this voyage all the more authentic.

Old South Carriage Company

Our stable is where your tour experience will begin and end. After checking in you can say hi to our draft horses, watch an educational video, purchases a bottle of water, or use our restroom. As you board your carriage via our inclined ramp / easy loading platform, your certified tour guide will greet you.

15 minutesAdmission Ticket Included

Charleston City Market (Pass By)

After leaving our stable, your carriage will stop at the City gate near the Market, where a route is assigned by the City of Charleston. Our industry is governed by this system in order to disperse the carriage traffic more evenly throughout the city. Your tour will cover about 30 blocks and 300+ years of history. Though specific landmarks vary by route, all tours pass by sights that give Charleston its unique charm – custom wrought iron gates, well-manicured gardens, historic mansions with picturesque piazzas, and the many church steeples of the “Holy City.”

Sarah + Tucker = a great tour!!
Patricia_M, Jan 2023
Sarah was just the perfect tour guide! She was so enthusiastic and full of great knowledge and love for the city of Charleston. Tucker was an amazing horse! He is a good listener and did a great job navigating the traffic (with Sarah’s help of course). Together these two made our tour one to remember!! Great job!!

Janice was our guide and Leo was our horse. Janice's knowledge of the area was interesting. Great sense of humor. She made it easy to imagine Charleston and it's culture during it's different ages. Leo knew his stuff. What a sweetie.

Do not recommend
Ashley_P, Jan 2023
Not child friendly whatsoever. Extremely inappropriate comments were made about the horse by the tour guide. We don’t recommend at all.

Extremely Disappointing!!!
Kelly_W, Jan 2023
The facility, carriage and your guide were outstanding!! That's why I added 2 stars. The your itself terrible, so NOT worth it!! Being in Charleston, I wanted my family to see beautiful homes, parks, history. Everything that makes Charleston so amazing. Instead so what looks like subsidized housing, lower income homes, a jail under construction and yes, Wentworth house, I suppose that's something. The your was beyond disappointing
Response from Host, Jan 2023
Hello, thank you for thoughts. I am sorry you did not get the route you wanted. Every carriage tour in the city of Charleston gets a zone and route chosen for them by the cities tourism division. There are 5 zones and 10 different routes to explore, this done in order to spread the carriages out as Charleston is one of the largest Carriage industries in the world. Unfortunately you cannot choose your own route even if you booked a private carriage. Any questions please reach out to me. Thank you for choosing Old South Carriage Co. Scott B. My husband took me on the carriage ride for my birthday. This was our first time riding a carriage and I exactly stood close by the horse (Buddy) and pet him on his nose. We are friends for life. I'm looking forward to coming back when it is a little warmer and I hope to see Buddy!
