What You Can Expect

Charleston’s Old South Carriage Historic Tour

Learn the history of Charleston on this carriage ride.

This 1-hour horse-drawn tour, a journey that travels back in time to the colonial beginnings of Charleston, meets at 14 Anson Street, home of the Old South Carriage Company. Charleston, the oldest and second-largest city in South Carolina, is defined by its cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages and pre-Civil-War-era houses.

As the tour progresses, pass by the old churches, antebellum mansions and lush gardens of Charleston — more than 2.5 miles and 30 blocks of residential real estate. Stop outside historic homes, like the Gov. William Aiken House, the former home of South Carolina Governor William Aiken, Jr. This house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

Part of the charm of the tour are the horses that pull the carriage. These are the same kinds of draft horses that worked on American farms in the early 1800s, making this voyage all the more authentic.

Must do in Charleston. Guide was very knowledgeable. The history of Charleston is deep and rich.
Tours are determined by lottery which the city regulates.

Have been on many historic carriage tours in Charleston, and this was by far the best one ever. Our guide Elliott was a delightful wealth of knowledge. His history expertise from studying at the College of Charleston was superior.
Our Bellgian Rowdy was so well trained that the fact that this was only his second time out on a real tour would never have been detected by any of us had not Elliott mentioned it at the end of the tour.

VERY ACCOMMODATING. WE GOT THERE EARLY AND THEY PUT US ON THE NEXT TRIP OUT EVEN THOUGH IT WAS VERY BUSY. WHILE A NEWBY, OUR TOUR GUIDE HAD AN EXCELLENT GRASP OF THE AREA, COMPLETE WITH HISTORICAL PROSPECTIVE AND HAD SEVERAL PLACES TO RECOMMEND TO EAT, WHICH WAS A PLUS SINCE WE HAD NOT BEEN TO CHARLESTON BEFORE.
