Return Details

Returns to original departure point
This horse-drawn carriage ride and tour, a journey that travels back in time to the colonial beginnings of Charleston, meets at 14 Anson Street, home of the Old South Carriage Company. Charleston, the oldest and second-largest city in South Carolina, is defined by its cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages and pre-Civil-War-era houses.

As the tour progresses, pass by the old churches, antebellum mansions and lush gardens of Charleston — more than 2.5 miles and 30 blocks of residential real estate. Stop outside historic homes, like the Gov. William Aiken House, the former home of South Carolina Governor William Aiken, Jr. This house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

Part of the charm of the tour are the horses that pull the carriage. These are the same kinds of draft horses that worked on American farms in the early 1800s, making this voyage all the more authentic.

Old South Carriage Company
Our stable is where your tour experience will begin and end. After checking in you can say hi to our draft horses, watch an educational video, purchases a bottle of water, or use our restroom. As you board your carriage via our inclined ramp / easy loading platform, your certified tour guide will greet you.
Duration: 15 minutes

Charleston City Market
After leaving our stable, your carriage will stop at the City gate near the Market, where a route is assigned by the City of Charleston. Our industry is governed by this system in order to disperse the carriage traffic more evenly throughout the city. Your tour will cover about 30 blocks and 300+ years of history. Though specific landmarks vary by route, all tours pass by sights that give Charleston its unique charm – custom wrought iron gates, well-manicured gardens, historic mansions with picturesque piazzas, and the many church steeples of the “Holy City.”

The carriage ride was excellent. The tour guide (David Lucas) was very informative and knew his history. He made it fun for all ages. He had a great sense of humor and kept the tour very interesting. Ben was our horse and he was a great guide and an all star leader!

Beautiful ride through a beautiful city. This tour did a great job of telling both history and current news. Rode with 10 and 12 year old children who both really loved it. Thanks!

My wife and I thought it was very nice. Mr Lucas is very knowledgeable of the area. And his cents of humor and little corks are something else. We strongly recommend everyone to experience a tour at Old South.

Fun and Informative Tour

Hayley was an exceptional tour guide and coachman. She was knowledgeable, charismatic, funny and great with Rex (the horse), who was new to pulling carriages. Rex had a lot of energy since it was his first ride of the day, was very friendly, and loves pets! Got to learn and see a lot of the town in just an hour!

History Lesson in a Horse Drawn Carriage
DavidJennings
, Feb 2021
I love history and our guide was an incredible older gentleman named David Henry Lucas (a builder, developer, movie producer, and an author with a family history starting in Charleston in 1754). "Brian", a 2000 lb Belgium Draft horse pulled us down route 2B. David told us so much history about the founders, the city, the homes, the residents, pirates Blackbeard and William Bonney, the churches, etc that I felt like I had read a book on Charleston during that one hour ride. We went by so many landmark homes with such wonderful stories that David described so well. Touring Charleston with Old South Carriages should be on everyone's list of things you need to experience.

Thanks for sharing your experience David, glad you had a good time on our historic carriage tour! We have the best horses in town and we agree, a carriage tour is a great way to start your visit to Charleston. Hope to see you again soon, thanks!
