Half-Day Chengdu Courtyard Cooking Class with Local Spice Market Visit | Jan 2020
The trip started on time with tthe guide Hazel who picked me up at the hotel. We went to a local market so we can look at local produce. We bought some ingredients that we used to cook. We even tried some local food and learned to make some dumplings. Later in a home style tea house, we learned how to cook 3 different dishes. Chef Chan was very patient and sweet. We later shared the food we cooked. On the whole it was a very good afternoon. 5 stars!

Half-Day Chengdu Courtyard Cooking Class with Local Spice Market Visit | Dec 2019
This was a relaxing, fun and unique tour. Winter promptly picked me up from the hotel before meeting another person. We walked the short distance to the wet markets where Winter showed us around, answered all my questions and let us taste different things. We then took a short stroll to the Cool Chilli China office where we stopped to have a tea and snack break before heading into the kitchen. The cooking process was easy enough for a low to moderate cook but very fast past when using the wok. Winter translated the chef’s instructions and after we made each dish we got to taste test them before having a sit down meal. I thoroughly enjoyed this unique experience and would highly recommend.

Half-day Walking Tour with Local Market Trip and Vegetarian Lunch in Nunnery | Dec 2019
This is a great tour for those that don’t want the typical tour. Winter picked me up from my hotel and took me straight to a local wet market where he happily answered all my questions and provided lots of information about what was there and how things are used. He was more then happy to buy things for me to try along the way. After the market, we took a relaxing stroll through some Buddhist temples, second hand markets and a Chinese medicine centre where he explained all the items used. We then headed to the nunnery, where Winter gave me the run down on correct protocol of eating there. This was truly the highlight of the tour. Traditional home cooked food served in a temple by nuns. The food was absolutely delicious and from what I’m told changes daily. After lunch, Winter took me to a local Taoist temple for tea. This was a great experience because this is where the locals drink tea and I felt like a local. After a good chat and lots of tea Winter helped me get back to my hotel. This tour is fantastic for those that don’t want the tour experience that has the guide with a flag and very structured. This is for those that want the unique, relaxing and mingle with the locals experience. I would highly recommend!

Half-Day Chengdu Courtyard Cooking Class with Local Spice Market Visit | Oct 2019
We had a great time in our Chengdu Cooking Class. Our guide Hazel was great - very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. She provided great information about the market and overall Chengdu food tips, Our diverse group was excellent and were a lot of fun. It was really interesting going through the market with Hazel explaining so many different, interesting foods (along with tastes on the way). Had a great time cooking and the food was really delicious. Don't eat before you go - there is so much and it's so good. Hotel pick-up and drop off worked great and everything was on-time. Really recommend this class for a great half-day activity. The only suggestion would be to provide a hard copy of the recipes (vs. electronic that we couldn't open). Thanks Hazel!

Half-Day Chengdu Courtyard Cooking Class with Local Spice Market Visit | Aug 2018

Our guide, Ocean, was enthusiastic and knowledgeable. We started our tour by visiting a large, local market where we each had a mission to find and purchase a specific item. At the market, we learned to make pork wontons and enjoyed freshly made spring rolls for a snack. Then we walked to a nearby restaurant where there is a beautiful courtyard and an outdoor kitchen. We took a break and sipped some tea then cooked for about an hour. It was so much fun to learn traditional Chinese cooking and use all of the appropriate tools. Afterwards we enjoyed all of the incredibly amazing food that we cooked. Ocean emailed us all of the recipes we cooked and extras just for fun. We have made the dishes several times and shared them with our friends and family who really appreciated them as well. This class was definitely one of the highlights of our trip -- you can't miss it!

Perfect experience! Amazing Chengdu food tour!

We had such a fantastic time on this Chengdu food tour! Winter was the perfect host, extremely knowledgeable about the cuisine and history of Chengdu and Sichuan, and an all-around fun guy to hang out with!

Our tour consisted of a wide variety of stops to sample the most popular street foods of Chengdu. We also visited a beautiful ancient teahouse to enjoy a snack and a leisurely pot of tea in a very authentic and real atmosphere. We toured the food markets of Chengdu, visiting spice and chili stalls, sampling treats, and learning all about Sichuan cuisine.

We ended the day with a fabulous hotpot experience, complete with all the ingredients one could imagine. Winter went out of his way to make sure that my vegan friend was able to experience the tour with vegan options so kindly arranged on all the snacks and restaurants we visited, and we both feel that this is one of the best, if not THE best, food experiences/tours we've ever taken part in. The cuisine of Chengdu is so interesting and wonderful, Winter is the perfect guide for your visit to one of the world's great food cities. He also is able to arrange interesting cooking classes, tea experiences, and more.

Half-Day Chengdu Courtyard Cooking Class with Local Spice Market Visit | Oct 2017

The half-day cooking class was an overall awesome experience! Our guide, Ocean, was extremely friendly, informative, and easy to talk to. She took us around some fascinating local markets, taught us about ingredients, and brought us back to a quaint tea-house to prepare the ingredients and cook. The class was organized, well-rounded, and most importantly, a lot of fun! I learned so much about Sichuan cooking and would highly recommend this class to anyone interested in Chinese food and culture.
